It's Microsoft, and a software system update. That's pretty much guaranteed failure.

Christ almighty, my PS2 might be outdated, but at least it's gone several years with no major problems and still going strong.

The E74 error is more likely on systems with the old boards (the same ones that were more prone to RRoD); buying a new 360, you're not likely to have such system destroying problems.

So, I seem to recall that the interface update added more options for scaling to different resolutions. Before it was basically limited to 720p and 1080p, but with the update, they allowed things to be scaled to 16:10 resolutions like you'd find on your computer monitor. This could possibly mean more people using the scaling, which would put more stress on the chip and possibly reveal a bad batch of chips (or even just a bad chip in general.
I don't really have solid information on the resolution scaling stuff, I'm mostly going by what I remember from my friends telling me about it way back when it came out, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
Taken from the ArsTechnica article linked to in the article above:
They assume that Sony didn't include a hardware scaler to keep costs down, but get a little cagey when I ask how much it costs to put Ana into the 360. "This isn't a $1,000 scaler," Henson says, "but it's a good one."
Translation: Cheap chip. I'm beginning to think they should've spent more money on the console and charged $600 on it at launch like Sony did.

exactly. or just plain and simple spent more time testing it. christ, they got it out a full year in advance. imagine what another 8 months would have done.
At the same time, this is M$ we're dealing with, so maybe not.

I heard about the ShamWow guy. The (ridiculous) rumor on the TF2 board is that the Scout is actually Vince from ShamWow. But he's not.
Anyway, pretty funny.

Finally got a chance to read this. They specifically state that the Falcon board is affected, but units with the Jasper board are already on store shelves. Honestly, they should just recall all pre-Jasper systems, but this is Microsoft we're talking about.

they know for a FACT that if they recall it AGAIN, sales will plummet. a few disgruntled people thjat are pissed off are alot better than a recall.
