It's the same '84(IIRC, maybe '86) Volvo with a Ford V8 that they've used in the previous 2 races. They were pretty close to leading in the last race before one of the guys accidentally missed a turn and was penalized 5 laps. This with a different paint job- s13.photobucket.com/albums/a282/ciscrack/LeMons/?action=view¤t=IMG_0516.jpgAnd from the Skip Barber and Audi experiences we've done, he said I'm a better race driver than he is. Thank you Gran Turismo for that.

An '80s Volvo saloon being raced - that's something you don't see everyday.

Had to agree to this: I understand that driving crappy old cars on a racetrack is exceedingly stupid and dangerous. In fact, I understand that just being in the area is stupid and dangerous. I've decided to do it anyway. If anything bad happens, I'm not going to sue the organizer or the track. Nobody else ought to either. I've read the rules, I understand them, I agree with them and I'll abide by them.

Volvo = Safest Car on the Track.
A wise choice.

New rules. Wish I could find video of the car that inspired the rule change.
NEW EXHAUST RULE FOR RENO & NEW ORLEANS Sorry to spring this on you after you've started construction; you can thank the pyros who toasted their E30's tank at the last race.
Effective immediately, we'll be enforcing and inspecting the requirement for a working exhaust system. The full text of the rules, 3.24 and 3.25, is now listed in red in the Rulebook: Team captains and car builders, read it right now!
For the rest of you, Rule 3.24's essence is "don't make your pipes out of soup cans and don't route them next to the gas tank." (The clear implication "you moron" has been tactfully left unwritten.) The nub of Rule 3.25 is "bring a floor jack to tech, because we're going to check if you read Rule 3.24."

Are demolition derby style vertical straight pipes still allowed?

if they did something like this on the montreal circuit, we were seriously gonna go with me and 3 guys in a buddies 90 civic which has been beat to hell. he bought it for 50 bucks (no joke) and has the bill of sale.
Me and another guy would drive/be the mechanics, and the other two dudes would film it/modify the car. it'd be great fun.
too bad it'll never happen....

Isn't Montreal all the way across the country from where you are? That would be a long ass drive, especially in an old Civic.

How far is Ohio from you? www.24hoursoflemons.com/events/lamestday09/If you were gonna do that, you have to do a bunch of safety upgrades to the car, roll cage, 5 point harness and all that. Read the rules so you know what you're getting in to. Never say never though. You got all kinds of time to get something going. I never really thought I'd get a chance to drive on a track, on monday I'll be driving on my 3rd track in a year, and a 4th next month.

The Thunderhill track I went to yesterday was pretty awesome, extremely technical. 15 turns, 2 blind hills(turns 5 and 9) and 2 insanely off camber turns(3 and 5a). When we got there the race car wasn't working very well so during the drivers meeting one of the guys took the carb off to screw with things. Found some strange white powder inside, but fortunately had an extra to put on. It had some power steering issues that somehow fixed itself during the downtime. He ended up having it running by the afternoon sessions. Anyway, we drove there in my moms bone stock, base model '94 Civic *hears lolz* for gas mileage reasons. Several cars were going out for a spectator lap when we first got there so I followed. I thought it was funny that car got on a track. After that we go meet with the crew, jump in the Volvo for a lap to find it has some acceleration problems, so that's when it started to be torn apart. Jesse and I had to go to the drivers meeting hoping it would be done afterwards. The drivers were broken up into a,b and c classes. New drivers with slow cars, new to average drivers in mid range cars, and skilled drivers in higher powered cars. The skilled drivers were dismissed first to get on the track. Jesse's been on the track before so he was let go with the midrange class. While I'm still in the meeting he comes back and asks for the keys to the Civic. We I get out he tells me the car still isn't ready so we might as well try to get the Civic teched to get that out there and make the most of our $200. By this time my group was on the track so I missed the first session. Track map and video so you can see what I'm talking about here. www.thunderhill.com/html/trackmap.htmlwww.youtube.com/watch?v=wzBmVJy-vR4 It starts at turn 6 and the Ferrari screwed up turn 11 on the first lap. We had it ready by the time Jesses second session started, so I went for a ride along with him to get a better understanding of the track at speed. Car did pretty well, acceleration lag(it's automatic) coming out of turn 11, but handled the turns fairly well. The start the cars at 30 second intervals, but during his 20 minutes he was only passed by one of 2 Corvettes. He was having problems with turn 14, serious brake fade coming into it causing bad understeer and going off into the rumble strip area before 15. My turn comes up, I had to have an instructor ride with me to give pointers and such. I already had a good idea of the line, so I did fairly well, to a few tips on soem turns, but Carlo seemed pretty impressed with my driving. I certainly did better than Jesse. I told him about it so he wanted me to ride with him again to give him pointers on where he was having problems. It still took a few laps to get 14/15 down. Jesse stayed to help work on the Volvo for my next session so I went out solo. TEARING SHIT UP! Far more confident, obviously wishing I had better acceleration. The most fun part was coming out of 5a all the way into turn 11. Turn 8 eventually ended up full throttle uphill doing 80. Turns 1 and 2 were fun, ending the straight doing 90, light brake for turn 1 to 75 mph and 2 a tire squealing 70 all the way around. On one lap I damn near had a minor drift going through 3. By the time I had a chance to get in the Volvo, my last session partly halfway over, got 5 laps in it. The rear end is awfully light so you gotta be careful turning, couldn't even trail brake into them without starting to lose it. Plenty of torque to come out of tight turns in 4th and pretty fast overall. It doesn't have a speedo so I have no idea how fast I was going, probably cresting 100-105 before turn 1 though. There was an open track session to finish the day, all cars and passing anywhere it's safe. I had a bad sleep deprivation headache, so Jesse took the Volvo for most of that. I just wanted to lay down and go to sleep, feeling it's a bad idea to go out again. That's all for now. Just have to wait four weeks til race day now. We're hoping to place in the top 10, maybe even the top 5. We'll see.
