Now... as you see me posting here you might be thinking "not another post from Nemesis about his colleague from work that doesn't know jack about cars..."
YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!!
Today, we were talking about my bike (a Gilera DNA 50 for those that don't know). During the Summer, I used to take it to work rather than driving or using public transportation. I don't take it right now because the weather is rainy and cold. And since I don't use the bike as often as I used to, I need to check up on my battery every once in a while.
The conversation went from batteries, to alternators, and THAT SAME GUY said that, contrary to what most people think, alternators charge a battery depending on a car's wheel movement rather than an engine's RPM.
I said to him: that is false, because everybody knows that an alternator is connected to the engine via a serpentine belt.
At this point, he asks me if I know what an alternator is, to which I respond "yes". Then we asks what's it connected to, and I say "the engine".
And then he makes that usual face that everybody does when someone is not believing a single word you're saying.
As I saw that, I say "look dude, I can take you to my car, pop the hood open, and I can show you where the alternator is and where that thing is connected to. I can tell you also that an alternator usually starts charging at 1500 engine RPMs. And that was my father's MECHANIC that said this. Are you going to say that you know more than a MECHANIC???"
I hate this kind of people that think they're always right and everybody else is wrong, even when proven otherwise.

hm, I will argue one point with you, but probably out of ignorance myself. the old man is a mechanic, and he tells me that once you get a vehicle with an alternator started, if the battery is low, the alternator charges once the vehicle is started, regardless of rpm. now, of course, the charge, if left unregulated, would increase over the Rpm range, and at extreme lows (we're talking less than 800 or so here) the charge wouldn't be enough to keep the battery alive. but I'm sure that once the vehicle is started and idling smoothly, that alternator is charging.
as for your bike: if you want to not have to check the battery all the time, buy a 30 dollar battery tender. hook it up when you're done for a few weeks, and then when you need the bike again, put th ebattery back in. we canucks do it all winter with our bikes. my SV battery is on a tender right now, until i start it up after I'm done doing valves.

The nub level of the GT5 board is inversely proportional to the number of days remaining until GT5's release date, so it seems.

GT Academy.
Seriously, I rofflecopter'd when I heard the news. How lame can kids be? And how could PD have NOT seen this coming. Hell, we knew what to expect from online kiddies, and that was back in PS2 days.
