From: fed76 | Back from my brief holiday so hopefully I’ll get in some ring time tommorrow before back to work. Things have changed at work and now I’m no longer on call so that means more late nights ringing it without having to worry about sleeping or getting called at three am. I find it odd that nobody has mentioned M34 to Damein. Not that the Mclaren Mercedes is a good car to learn with, or that it’s a good way to learn, but Its how I learned the ring, and was a very, very good challenge. Its also necessary to get 100% completion so just a thought. Also if Oni enjoys a car on N1’s and you are more a grip driver as am I, then get ready for a tough ride. It took me a long time to be able to drive the ring with aids of yet alone on N1’s but its totally worth it if not for just the satisfaction. Anyway I need more cash like viper, so I’m running the F1 championship to get more. After that I’ll be buying the MG and the beatle. As for the wife and racing if theres nothing good on the tube she reads while I race, and if there is then I don’t race. Which isnt so bad since without the breaks I’d really be obsessed, and the wife is pretty sure I’m border line psycho about it anyway. Soon I’ll post some RUF times but I still have the 3400S to do so it could be a while. The RR one that is new is certainly my favorite but not the fastest, that is the middlefinger bird but not by much. The F1 series might be done tomorrow but not likely at this rate as less than 100% win ratio just wont do. So TTFN --- From: viperinthegrass | Posted: 11/1/2005 4:08:19 AM | Message Detail Nay! Japanese cars is very limited, so it will probably require some research time on my part...which I guess is a good thing. More knowledge > less knowledge. I hope you don't mind if I refrain from the use of nitrous, though. I have a very strong aversion to it. When I was a young rocket-rider, those who knew a little sompin'-sompin' 'bout cars tore engines down and rebuilt them to run hard and fast. Those who didn't, slapped on a tank of nitrous. So...having nitrous was like jumping up and down, waving a big, brightly-colored flag and yelling at the top of your voice, "Hey...I'm too stupid modify my car the proper way, so I decided to cheat!! Wanna race?" I realize that things are different now, and that people often do both. Use of nitrous is no longer a sign of stupidity, but generally the opposite. But, being old and "set in my ways", I can't bring myself to touch (or even stand too close to) a tank of nitrous oxide. Kinda like finding some "almost new" underwear, exactly your size, laying in a parking lot. You know you could use it (because guys never buy underwear until their old ones emerge from the dryer as a ball of lint), but find it far too repulsive of a thought to even go near it, let alone touch it. Well, enough of that. Didn't mean to get so carried away on the subject. Sometimes my fingers seem to have a mind of their own. I'll just go and do some research and report my results in a day or two. Peace, out. --- From: Damiensayer | Posted: 11/1/2005 7:42:10 AM | Message Detail OK i chose my ''budger ricer'' i went with a 1990 maxda rx-7 and managed to spend every last credit on tuning it and it turns out i was very happy with the results. Going out for a while now but when i return i think ill try a subaru legacy out with the same budget etc.. may also have a spin in the mx5 just for fun. "You can't be serious," they said. "You're going to drive on this historic course in THAT?!" "Of course I am," I said. "It's the only car I own, what else am I going to drive?" I don't have much money, and the car has seen better days, but it was mine and I was determined to prove it was worthy. The results of that first day were not encouraging. It took me 10 minutes and 15 seconds to complete a lap with these cheapo tires and a gutless engine--never mind that my car weighed less than one metric ton--it was just too slow. I began ordering parts, trying to keep within my limited means--and to the rules of the road. That racing exhaust would improve my power, but it'd never pass inspection. The sports package wouldn't improve my numbers enough to be worth it. So I settled on a low-grade tuneup and a reprogrammed ECU, slapped on some new shocks and springs, added a twin-plate clutch to take some of the slop out of the driveline and waited. The challenge day arrived, and so did I in my CRX. I had to endure even more pointing and laughing--now because one of my tires had sprung a leak. Fortunately I keep a can of Fix-a-Flat in the car for just such an emergency. It wasn't perfect, but it would last for a lap or two. I watched the other drivers set rather blistering paces, times that I was sure I wouldn't be able to match, even with close to 200 horsepower. I set out to the track, though, intent on doing the best I could. If anything could show just how out of my league I was, my lap time that day certainly would. All the hard work I had done to my car got me a measely nine seconds. I knew that if I bothered stopping I'd just have to put up with more jeering, so home I went, my proverbial tail between my legs. --- I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that you're a moron. From: Soulidarity | Posted: 11/1/2005 4:24:23 PM | Message Detail Blog entry 81437 Hey guys! Its Hans. Just thought I'd fill you in on the last few days. I took my Evo out racing again three nights ago. I must have been pushing it too hard the last few years, cuz I ended up having to have it towed back home. As it turns out, I've got a cracked cylinder head. Not good. I was standing out looking under the hood the next day when my dad came out and asked me, "Hast du ein ricer gebrochen?" "Listen dad, you can speak English," I told him. "We're not actually in Germany. This is just a story, so English would make reading a bit easier for the audience. And its a street racer, not a ricer." To make a long story short, he decided to lend me 35,500 euros to get a new car. Its great having a dad that's written into the story to have money to just throw at me. I headed down to "Honest Friedrich's Auto Yard" to check out what he had for sale. I gave a cursory glance to the Evo's and STi's in the lot. I had been the first in the car club with an Evo, but Ludwig, Jonas, and Klaus (always the followers) had gotten their own Evos soon after. Gertrude and Gunter were married and had twin Sti's (how cute! I'm going to throw up now). So I decided against both. I saw a 300 ZX in the lot as well, but at over 13000 Euros, I wouldn't have enough cash to spare for all the mods that would be needed to make it cool. I ended up settling on an '88 Nissan Silvia K's (S13) for 6600. Friedrich said it was in bad need of an oil change (shouldn't he have done that as a courtesy to the customer?), but I went ahead and took it. It would certainly stand out from all the Hondas, Subs and Mitsus in the group. Luckily there was an Amuse tuner shop just down the road. I had Otto do the work, since he had done such great work with my Evo. I had him install a Sports Suspension, Sports Clutch, Sports Flywheel, Carbon Driveshaft, Stage 1 Turbo, Sports Intercooler, Racing Chip, Sports Exhaust, Racing Brakes, a 3D Type DW Wing (my friends were going to be so jealous) and set the downforce to max, a set of Rays 024 gold rims, and a tank of nitrous. I also had him pull out the back seat to get rid of some weight, and do an oil change. Otto is amazingly fast, so he only took a few hours to get it all done. I ran it down the street to get it washed. I had 700 euros left over after all this, so I looked desperately for a shop that sold stickers, as that was what I really needed to get this baby moving. But alas, there were no sticker shops in this town This brings me to yesterday. When I rolled up to our meeting spot outside of the ring, Ludwig and Klaus were already there fawning over each other's Evos, and Norbert and his Prelude were keeping aloof as usual. They were shocked to see my new ride, as they hadn't heard about my Evo's fate. Reinhard showed up next in his Civic hatchback, followed shortly by Gertrude and Gunter in their twin Subies. Eventually Jonas showed up in his Evo, and Ludwig and Klaus migrated over to it and continued their fawning there. We were just waiting on Sascha. My smile from watching the three stooges and their evos quickly faded when I saw the yellow NSX come around the corner. "Dammit, who told Sigmund about this meet?" I yelled. Sig always managed to show up whereever we went. The guy was annoying. He seemed to love flaunting his wealth by running that NSX around with us. No one liked the guy, and he wouldn't even push his car anyways. Why buy a fast car if you're not going to test its limits? While I was fuming about all this, Sascha finally arrived, and we hit the ring... --- From: Damiensayer | Posted: 11/1/2005 4:30:36 PM | Message Detail Thanks for the link old guy, checking it out now From: Soulidarity | Posted: 11/1/2005 4:36:28 PM | Message Detail Ok, so this BR was way too funny for me to pass up. So I guess I'm taking a break from my break? You can see my car and mods in the above post. It ended up with 215 HP, forgot to write the weight down. My first lap was cautious as I needed to get the feel for the game again. No major mistakes, but it was pretty slow at 8'55.660. Second lap in, I dropped the hammer. All was good through Flugplatz. And for my next trick, I'm going to trail my rear right wheel into the grass at Schwedenkreuz sending me into a 720 degree spin into the sand at Aremburg without touching the Armco! Amazing! Of course I managed two more spins and about a half dozen love taps on the armco. I finished the lap even slower than the first, at 8'59.892. But I felt like I was getting a feel for the car now. My third lap was a reasonably brisk pace, much like the second, but I had learned from my mistakes, and made nothing more than minor errors by trailing off into the grass at a few points. No armco whatsoever. The difference in the time reflected this at 8'24.348. All in all, this is a great, albeit underpowered, car. Even on N grade tires (I had to use N3s, anything less would have been too much of a jump for me) it has fabulous grip, though the end tail did show promise of an ability to wag if coerced. When I take this game back up on a regular basis, I think this is the first car I'm running, as I'd like to put it back on S grade tires and find some competitive circuits to run it in. --- From: jwrebholz | Posted: 11/1/2005 4:43:44 PM | Message Detail Soulidarity: That's hilarious. And I'm sure the guy in the Civic hatch and the fact that I also chose a Civic hatch is just a coincidence, right? --- I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that you're a moron. DON'T BELIEVE IT!! For my Budget Ricer, I chose a used '94 Subaru WXR STi (in Vivian Red) for 9,722 cr. I added a stage 2 turbo and racing intercooler (and of course some N3's), bringing it to 373 hp. It was really fast, but maxed out at 150 mph. On my test lap I ran an 8'08.4, but was on the rev limiter more than half of the Dottinger Hoho straight. I had just under 10,000 cr. left to spend, which isn't enough for the FC tranny, so I thought I'd be smart by taking off the intercooler, which gave me enough money to do the engine balancing. It gave me slightly less hp (364), but I thought I'd make up for it with the higher top-end speed from the higher RPM's. Think again! Top speed was STILL 150 mph!! Strangely enough, my single test-lap time was a nearly identical 8'08.1, even with the lower hp. Both laps had a few minor offs, but nothing major. Unfortunately, you can't undo engine balancing, so my attempt with the WRX is finished...my budget used up. I DID see a tasty-looking Supra, though. I think maybe I should give a FR a try instead of another 4WD. --- The best laid plans of mice and men, often go astray. I turned off the driving aids in the 240Z and took it for a ride. Shaved just over 5 seconds off breaking the nine minute mark. Thanks totally to added acceleration from the loss of ATC. The 240 was almost easier to handle. By just nailing the nitrous, or in lower gears nail the throttle and you can line er up where you want it. I think maybe lap 2 in the F1 race today helped me on that especialy through the last to turns (tooo much woooork to type the names) before the long straight. The MR2 on the other hand became a beast, thanks in part I believe to the loss of weight. It was getting nitrous just on the top end of four and mostly through 5. From: oldguy1957 | Posted: 11/1/2005 9:53:07 PM | Message Detail Budget Ricer attempt #2 The Supra I had my eye on was, indeed, the '90 twin turbo. I bought it for 11,458 cr. which left me with 24,042 cr. for mods. I spent it as follows: 50 - oil change 0 - N3 tires 13,500 - Stage 2 Turbo 3000 - racing intercooler 1500 - racing chip 2900 - semi-racing exhaust (I hope it passes the sound level test!) 3000 - Carbon driveshaft That left me with 92 cr. and gave me 418 hp. The combination of turbo-lag and serious wheel-spin until I hit 3rd gear made it a handfull coming off slow-speed corners. It was impossible to get smooth application of power on exit of turns. It was also very unstable at high speeds. Making it through the Pflanzgarten "straight" and negotiating the slow-down before the S/F line both had about a 50-50 success rate...usually including some wheel-whipping panic-corrections. Despite all this, I was able to break the 8-minute mark with a 7'58.9. And that, by necessity, was a fairly cautious run. I was much happier with the handling of the Subaru, and could have easily beaten this time if I hadn't had the top-end speed limited to 150 mph. The Supra, BTW, topped out at around 176 mph. In conclusion, I'd have to say that if this really was my every-day ride I would have had to knock at least a minute off my time (if not two) in order to assure I still had my car (and my body in one piece) at the end of the day! --- The best laid plans of mice and men, often go astray. From: wanderingmuse22 | Posted: 11/2/2005 4:33:34 AM | Message Detail The turbo lag on the Supra is almost RUF like, and I've only driven mine stock. I like it, but it's definately a bad idea to downshift into 2nd. I love the gearing and power on that car, and I love how it rewards a good turn in and braking with a sweet slip of the hips, stepping the back end out nicely but not wildly. I enjoyed the Supra Twin Turbo too much to modify it, which is why I couldn't use it for this BR myself. I'm not done driving it though. Also, I feel myself getting hooked on "standard tire" driving, and I blame you dirty 'Ringers (kidding) for it. As soon as I have time I'll get down to business with the Mitsubishi Galant. It was one of my favorite cars in GT2. Not so much for how it drove, but it looked sweet with the racecar modification. I miss having that option. --- For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Look forward to comparing results. I will post a little later on that. (I did buy the wing, btw, and have kept it at zero downforce. It goes nice with the OZ gold rims.) From: oldguy1957 | Posted: 11/2/2005 7:07:40 AM | Message Detail Yes, I think the Twin-Turbo Supra was engineered to run and handle best with its stock hp. The turbo-lag wouldn't create such a drastic change in acceleration if I hadn't nearly doubled the hp. On stickier tires, this may have been manageable. On N's, it was not. I'm used to regulating the amount of drift though a corner (when on N's) by throttle manipulation. The one or two seconds of turbo-lag made that method very difficult, if not impossible. I suppose, if you kept the throttle at least partially open, and just slowed by brake application (except under hard braking), the lag might be greatly reduced. I had driven it enough, though, and didn't feel like experimenting any more. Muse, I would strongly suggest you do as your instincts have told you, and keep the car stock. I don't doubt it would be a nice ride if it isn't injected with steroids. --- The best laid plans of mice and men, often go astray. Oldguy - The engine balancing usually only bumps up the rev limiter by 100 or 200rpm which is not a big gain. Sometimes the rev limiter even stays where it is. Silly. Also, I've found two cars which don't like the balancing at all. 1. The Caterham. the limiter is shifted from 12,000rpm to 12,100rpm. That makes the rev meter display 0-18,000rpm. I don't like that because there usually isn't much time to look at the display and it isn't very accurate this way. 2. The 2CV. Balancing the engine of a fully tuned 2CV LOSES 3hp. What gives?
WR:
MG TF160 '03 in Trophy Blue:
I originally did the driving part for this WR vehicle several days ago, so I had to do another lap with it to refresh my memory. It is a very neutral handler indeed. Though the suspension is not very hard, there was surprisingly little difference in turning with throttle on or off. Of course, the radius was tighter with the throttle lifted, but jumping on the accelerator didn't cause any understeer. As others have said, it is a car that could handle a lot more power than it has. The only situation where it didn't go exactly where I wanted was when I overdid the trailbraking. With a lighter touch, however, trailbraking proved useful in many situations. My best lap was a satisfying 8'31.813. After the stock version, I decided to give an upgraded TF a go to satisfy my need for speed.
MG TF 160 '03 in British Racing Green:
My first TF, it was already lightened (stage 2) and had a racing exhaust and a racing chip fitted. I gave it a port polish, a balancing tune and NA stage 2 kit. These mods brought me up to 251 garage hp and down to 1046kg. Furthermore, I bought VW0197 wheels to give it the finishing touch. On the 'Ring, the handling was very similar to the untuned one. Just with better acceleration. It was still as stable as ever, and exhibited very slight power understeer. Actually, I think the added power made the handling stand out even more. It was a fun ride, and fast, too - I went around the 'Ring in 7'54.8.
BR:
I chose a Nissan Skyline GTS-t Type M '89 for this and upgraded it. I'll get to the details later, but I wanted to say that it is one tail-happy ride on N3s!
BTW, great work on the BRs, everyone! --- Currently suffering from a bad case of O.R.S.

For the Budget Ricer, I also picked the 1990 Toyota Supra 2.5 Twin Turbo. The torque number (241 at 4800) looked interesting, despite the weight of the vehicle (1520 kg). The car in the lot was black, which meant I could match a wing to it and set the black off with some gold rims.
Yes. It's true. I am a slave to style...
The car cost 11,458, which boosted my upgrade budget to 24,042. The wing (straight type bb), rims (OZ 031), oil and wash left me 22,242 cr. to play with.
I ran a few laps, with a best of 8:41. The car felt stiff, heavy and fat. But it was pretty. Taking after its owner, in a way. With weight reduction out of the equation, more power was needed to bring the Supra to life.
I didn't want to spray, figuring I was "cool" enough with my wing at zero downforce and flashing my gold rims. So, I added the Stage II turbo, sports intercooler, the 1.5 LSD, and the sports exhaust. That brought the power up to 383 hp and left about 842 crs in the budget.
The Supra had a little spring in its step now. But still dull. A tendency to understeer. On sharper downhill corners, I was able to push it into a four wheel slide. From a dead stop, I could spin my tires through three gears. Tons of torque.
Back on the track, the car failed to post any impressive times due to the dead handling. If it wasn't a daily driver, I would lose the weight and put some sport tires on it. But, in any event in three laps, my best time was an 8:26.
Bottom line: I think I'm quitting the german japanese car enthusiast club and joining a japanese german car club.

I'm wondering if anyone has found a really good map of bend names. The one I use seems incomplete and sometimes inaccurate. The best one I've seen is the one on Ben Lovejoy's site, except for the fact that the names in the red boxes are blurred so much it is hard to get the correct spelling of them.
All seem incomplete. For example, they mostly show a straight or slightly squiggly line with no names between Hoho Acht and Wippermann (sp?). To me, there's 5 (at least 4) distinct corners that you need to slow down for in that section. It is all usually just lumped into the heading of "the technical section".
I pulled a nice 720 in that section with my Supra, and wanted to boast about it a bit, but didn't know how to explain exactly where it was, so I left it out completely.
And yes, I've checked the maps in Amar's first post, and those don't seem to do the track justice either.
So, if anyone is using one that they think is wonderfully perfect, please share! --- The best laid plans of mice and men, often go astray.

Greetings and salutations from Neverland. As threatened, I'm stealing the WR pick this week (thanks, Soul. You're next, no ifs, ands, or buts). This will be the Last Charge of Mr Pinstripes and is Immortals, Pt. 1. Pt. 2 (my final BR) will be announced sometime during the week. I'm announcing the WR early so everyone has a chance to pick up a...
'94 TVR Griffith 500 (sorry, Oni) from Used Car Showroom I.
It's been far too long with no TVR Weekend Rider, as several of us TVR fans have pointed out (mostly to each other). I never got a chance to drive one on the 'Ring, but I'd be willing to bet that it would come in somewhere in the neighborhood of 7'30 with me behind the wheel.
As with all of the TVRs, the Griffith is a supremely capable ride (if a bit tame), and is a blast to drive hard. Those of you who don't mind a stableish car should love it. I think the transmission was one of the good ones, but I may be wrong (the T350 tops out at 125 or so- POOP!).
---
Flibutz- Sorry I missed your BR. It sounds like a fun one. Let's just pencil me in using a '86 Toyota MR2 1600 G-Limited SC in New Sherwood Toning. It's probably a bit slow compared to some of the other cars, but it's lots of fun.
Soulidarity- Damn, man! That's a funny story! You have the next WR pick.

The TVR one-make races just happened to be next on my list for max a-spec points. I trust the Griffith 500 will be a good car for that. It apparently shows up fairly regularly (or else I was lucky), because it was in the used showroom the first time I looked. I'll hold off on driving it on the Ring until at least Friday though.

Found it. Had to add "While I was" to the first sentence.
Budget Ricer
Havok's first official contribution that actually contributed something
While I was growing up in Bergwerk, it was not easy to find a person who understands cars. Everyone thinks that Mercedes, or RUF, or BMW, or even Audi makes the best cars. Everyone is wrong. None of those Euro sedans could compare with the splendor of Japanese engineering. And NOS.
When I turned 18, I found an obscure uncle had left me an inheritance of 35,500 credits. I wasn't sure what a credit was either, but I knew that I could finally own my dream piece of Japanese engineering. And NOS.
I found a local German Japanese car enthusiast club. Like me, they had all been mercilessly picked on in high school, but we all found comfort in Kraftwerk. And NOS. They explained that they would be taking a trip to the Nurburgring soon, and that I should come along. But what to buy? Civics and Accords were well represented, as were Imprezas, Evos, and even a glorious Skyline. Supras were as common as NOS. So, with my meager inheritance, I went to Crazy Siegfried's Used Car Lot. The beauty I would soon drive stood out to me immediately, beckoning to me with its luxurious Super White paint job. Oh yes, the 1981 Toyota Celica XX 2800 GT would soon be mine, for only 8,130 credits. The NOS would come later.
Even after changing the oil, it only had 170 hp of pure unadulterated power, so I added a 3D Type DW Wing in matching white (no downforce added, though) and N I O 249 rims that were on sale used. Somehow, it still only had 170 hp of pure unadulterated power. There had to be a mistake. So, I went to the local Blitz tuner and bought some NOS. WTF? Still only 170 hp? Obviously that system is inaccurate.
I added a Sports Exhaust to sound more bad ass, NA Stage 2 tuning for a little hp, now up to 236, and then got some carbon fiber going to reduce the weight to 1123 kg (WR 1 and 2). I also bought a semi-racing flywheel because I had barely enough money for it, but had no real reason to do so other than it was shiny, and I like shiny things. And NOS.
In preparation for the Nurburgring, I bioengineered a new body for myself out of carbon fiber (I forgot to add in personal weight, but I did go on N2's with no driving aids). Lap one, I didn't touch the magical go-juice and finished at 9.26.999 with a top speed of 151 mph. On the second lap, I let it all hang out and took 10 seconds off that. Would have been more, but my vision was still blurry from NOS and I missed the last series of turns. Thank god I'm immortal. I got up to 172 mph with NOS going, which clearly demonstrates the superiority of Japanese engineering. And NOS. --- "I will be cool and creamy. I will have my recommended daily allowance of pie."

BR™ - Nice work Flibutz!
Thought I would share this letter from my Cousin in Germany with you, (Translated from German) Hi Cuz,
Have just returned from our Japanese Gran Teuton Club's annual day at the 'Ring. As usual I took my old Silvia K's Aero along. Normally this would mean another frustrating day of coming last on the time sheets, but thanks to your tip on that horse race, I won a 22500 cr. quadrella, which I spent on upgrading old Silvia, thank you!! We gathered at our usual campsite and had a jolly old time, everyone was in high spirits, laughing and joking hysterically - heres one “ my dog has no nose, how does he smell? Terrible!!” I thought I'd split my lederhosen after that one! The next morning after some calisthenics and a hearty breakfast of sauerkraut, würst and kartoffelpuffe, we set off for some laps. Imagine everyone's surprise when I was consistently second on the time sheets, embarrassing the usual bunch of WREX and EVO freaks. Of course it was Stucki with his '90 Supra 2.5 Twin Turbo R, churning out laps in his usual Robot like fashion who topped the lists. I was only .225 seconds behind him but I had my secret weapon!! Last lap for the day and I was right behind Stucki into Dottinger Hohe, time to act. I pressed the button hidden in the cigarette lighter which would unleash a Huge Nitrous burst. Nothing! I tried again, Nothing!! Those Scheisekopf's!! No wonder they were in a good mood last night, they had sniffed all my Nitrous! Oh well there is always next year.

I tried various combinations of upgrades but settled on the one above, the turbo 2 only gave me lap times tenths of seconds quicker than turbo 1 due to wheelspin and lag. In the end the stock box was okay and the stock suspension would be also.
I was going to use the '90 Twin Turbo Supra but it had already been snaffled, so I used it as a comparison car, setup as follows :

From: Flibutz | Posted: 11/3/2005 5:14:16 AM | Message Detail Budget Ricer: Hi. It's Franz reporting from the good old Deutschland. I heard there was a lot of talk about the wonderful japanese cars in the world-famous Diary, and thought I'd add in my piece. I'm still laughing at VITG's dog joke (a Monty Python quote?)and Havok finding comfort in Kraftwerk. And NOS. Not to mention Gunther and Gertrude with their Subies. When our good car club decided to include a 'Ring trip in our next meet, I wasn't too happy about the idea. Not that I don't like the track, I even know it pretty well, but my '89 'Line wasn't up to snuff at the time. Well, I scraped together my last credits, 6,900. Clearly not enough, so to the bank I went and got a quick loan of 20,000. That should do it. I chose to tune my car at Amuse who also offered a free installation for bigger buys. Though the shop was a long ways from my home, I knew Otto's lightning-quick installation work would save me a lot more time than I lost driving there and back. And time was of the essence. I slept on a thin mattress at Otto's garage while he was working on my Nissan. The morning came, and I woke up sore and aching but already a little late for our meet. Thankfully, the car was ready and I left a hefty tip in Otto's pocket. The poor bastard had fallen asleep on the couch of their office room, still in his overalls, and I didn't dare to wake him up. I pulled a dyno slip out of the printer and was happy to see it reported over 330 crank hp. When I arrived at the meeting point, everyone was already there. Helmut was leaning against his shiny new Integra and other Honda guys were circling around it. Ludwig had installed a new set of neons on his 200SX and was looking sharp. Ernst was just about to steal the show with the WRC stickers on his STi, when I rolled in. My rear wing instantly caught the attention it deserved. I was proud to show them my nitrous bottle and other goodies, although Konrad claimed I couldn't match his Civic that had a B18C engine swap done and was iced with a turbo. We also had a surprise visitor, a crazy yankee whose name was Mr.Pinstripes and who was driving a supercharged MR2. Initially, most of the guys were laughing at my "high" (100mm) ride height, but Ludwig spoiled his front spoiler before we even arrived at the track, and Kurt did the same on the 'Ring... Hope they learned something. On the track, I performed pretty well. I didn't clock the fastest laptime, thanks to Rudolf and his overpowered EVO, but I did put some hard-tuned cars to shame. Additionally, I got an honorable mention for my death-defying drifts. Specifics: Nissan Skyline GTS-t Type M (R32) '89 in Red Pearl Metallic - 8,347cr. Oil Change - 50 Dunlop 006 Wheels - 500 Straight type CB Wing - 1,200 N3 Tyres - free Nitrous - 5,000 Racing Chip - 1,200 Stage 2 Turbo - 13,000 Sports Suspension - 3,100 Semi-Racing Exhaust - 2,850 Otto's tip - 200 Total - 8,347+27,100 = 35,447cr. Final hp - 337 (garage figure) I ended up with a fine 'Line. RWD R32s rock. Very responsive, though a handful at times. The engine provided brisk power through a reasonably wide powerband, and the turbo lag was very manageable. When cornering, it spins its rear wheels nicely all the way through 3rd gear. In 4th also, it only needs a slight tap of nitrous to go into the wheelspin mode. I didn't want to use TCS (as I usually do) and spoil the fun. The wing was set at 0 downforce. More drag makes a car slowa dontcha know. My best lap was a 7'56.500. Strangely enough, my best Godzilla (R32 GT-R) lap on S2s was 7'57.500 and yes, those are exact figures. The WR sounds good, I haven't driven the TVRs much in GT4, though I liked them in earlier GTs. I have driven the Griffith 500 before, but it was number 300-something in my ride history so I have no recollection of it. --- Currently suffering from the lack of a good sig. Upon arriving, I walked straight to the closest dealership I could find. I strode up to the sales man, told him of my situation, and we walked over to a line of beautiful Porches and Rufs, with a nice Ferrari at the end. I stopped to look at each car, sitting in every other one. Just then, I noticed the magnificient Bugati Veyron hiding in the back row. I pointed it out, walked over and sat down. I didnt test drive it, I just said to the man "I want it." he responded with a "Que?" and because I dont know german I pointed to the car, and opened up my suitcase full of money. He looked puzzled, and it was then I realized I had forgotten to pack the money! I was quickly punched in the face, and hissing and spitting, I walked back to the airport and E-Mailed my Banker, with orders to transfer 3.55 million dollars to my german account. Unfortunately, there wa sa miscommunication, and instead of getting 3.55 million dollars, I got 3.55 million CENTS! With only $35500 to my name, I jogged back down to the dealer, punched the man in the face, and went to his used car competitor across the street. Once there, I jumped into the first car I saw, threw $8700 in pennies out of the window, and sped off. Much to my suprise, the noise emitting from my engine was not the familiar sound of a four banger, but the whine of a sweet sweet rotary. I stepped out, and then quick jumped back in, deciding it was better to stop the car first. I screeched to a halt in front of the local track, and to my suprise, it was NURBURGRING! I took the first real glance at my car. It was a nice 1990 RX7. Unfortunately, the tired were completely bald. I made a mental note of where the track was, and then drove to the local HKS shop. A man by the name of Benoit Rutherford James Mgurk quickly came to my needs. Apparently they were fresh out of Sports tired, but he rolled on a new set of Road Tires right away. He kept mentioning something about N3's but I wasnt listening. I looked around the shop, spotting several parts that would look great under the hood of my brand new 1990 RX7, but I decided it best to drive it first, and go form there. In a stunning drive, I managed to stay on the track the whole way around, and got it done in a greasy 9 minutes and 10 seconds. I quickly sped back to HKA, and screamed to benoit, "SHE NEEDS MORE POWER!" Mr. Mgurk didnt understand, so I pointed to a shiny turbo, held up two bags of pennies, and he got the idea. I also convinced him to give me a racing intercooler. I figured it to be 1,300,000 pennies for the turbo, and another 270,000 cents for the intercooler. Figuring that that should destroy the handling of my car enough to justify new suspension, i drove her back to the track and fired it up. After a scorching 8 minutes and 50 seconds, I decided she was still far too driveable. Back to Benoit, I hit him over the head with a sock containing 125,000 pennies and he pointed to a little microchip which his assistant installed promptly. I forced another 260000 coins on them for a nice twin plate clutch and a cool 100,000 coppers for a nice racing flywheel. I got out to the track and turned a nice 8 minutes and 38 seconds, after a hair raising ride out of control. The logic for choosing N3's being that a better car deserves a better tire, and pictures of the GT's stock Goodyear F1's resemble the N3.
What happens is, the Ford GT '05 handles better on N3's better than most cars do on S2's. Wow. It, like the RGT, is absolutely a masterpiece.
Not a lot's been said about the TVR Griffith 500 yet. If you drive it on S2's, do you think you could break the 7'30 mark in it?

I have been taking “Silvia” for a few more laps on N2 & N1's with and without aids, all I can say is that I am getting better although I feel the DS2 is not ideal for the hardcore stuff! Oh well. I too would like to compliment everyone for their hilarious and informative Budget Ricer writeups. They are a real treat to read. If I may be indulged for a moment I would like to tell you a story.
When I was about six years old I had to change Schools ( I burnt down the last one, just kidding!) and there was this old witch of a Teacher ( who was not even my class Teacher ) who would come and stand behind me while I was working and berate me for not doing “joined up “ writing. She would whack me with a ruler on the fingers and insist on me writing “proper” and generally make my life a misery. As a result I have the weirdest handwriting you have ever seen and I developed a healthy phobia about writing in general. This made having to write essays and assignments throughout my School years a nightmare as I just loathed it. Having to write reports etc. for work has always been like pulling teeth, despite being able to type instead of writing stuff.
Then along came the Diary, and one day a “Novel” by Soulidarity ( for those who remember the Street / Rally Car Budget Rider ). I was inspired to have a go and guess what? I enjoyed it! All those years of Angst just melted away, there is no stopping me now! So I would just like to thank Soulidarity ( and NOS ) for getting me started.
Flibutz – well done, you have a sharp eye, it was indeed from a Monty Python sketch.
I am back from a couple of days camping in the far south of the state at a place called Finns beach ( very beautiful ) so I will get stuck into the Griffith ride on Sunday.
More from the Great Southern Land later.

Great, now I'm going to have to Budget Rice an Evo.
I was doing a thing on the GTP boards, where they were trying to figure out how to drift an Evo VIII MR GSR and having trouble, so I pick it up, put the AYC on and up to 130, about 400 Hp, N1 tires, and BAM! it's an insane little 4 wheel drifter, but you don't countersteer, you steer INTO the turn.
I point this out, and as I wear a Fedora, I said "Call me: The Drift Pimp" which I believe is only fitting.
I wonder if this Evo get's too sideways for the Ring. ---

If the Griffith isn't showing up in your lot, rather than buy the Speed 12, I think you'd be better served to get the Tuscan, Tamora, or 350.
That's just my opinion, but the Speed 12 is so overpowered that the only track I've found it suited for is the Test Course.

One last post, then I'll go away. My final act as resident madman will be the...
Phenomenal Cosmic Power! BR-esque.
Here is the rule (yes, only one):
30 hp limit.
Go out, grab a riding lawnmower, and feel free to slap as much aftermarket stuff in as you want (it'll make this a bit more tolerable). I'd suggest the Subaru 360 or the Fiat 500 series, as both are nigh-uncontrollable monsters (albeit baby monsters, but still nigh-uncontrollable), and will keep your attention for most of the lap.
I think I wrangled a 10'00-ish time from a 500R on N1 tires, but I've been sitting on this one since Vol VII and my memory has always been a bit fuzzy.
---
The Tamora is probably closest to the Griffith in performance, but I haven't spent much time in one. Most of my TVR time was divided between the Tuscan and the S6 Cerbera.
The S12 Cerbera is a great lesson in throttle control. If you want to be humbled, take it out on the 'Ring on N2 tires, no TCS. It's a handful...
Have fun, everyone.

WR:
At first, the Griffith didn't seem to match my driving style well. However, after a few laps it started to grow on me and the laptimes were quite consistent from there on.
The key to fast times with this car seems to be braking technique, and to an extent, patience with throttle. Mostly, I was steering the car just as much with the brakes as with steering. It liked early and sometimes light braking, especially in the faster bends to allow time for proper weight transfer. Trailbraking is a must with this one, but hammer the brakes too hard and it'll understeer again.
The Griffith seems to really need its soft front end, I bet it would suck with hard shocks/springs in the front. How would you turn it then? This was very evident with lower grade tyres. Overall, my initial dislike turned into much warmer feelings with more seat time. A very good car for learning braking!
When I found consistency with the car, I decided to do a tyre comparo with it. Below are my best times on different grades of rubber.
N1 - 8'23.033 N2 - 8'04.931 N3 - 7'47.271
S1 - 7'35.895 S2 - 7'31.682 S3 - 7'27.019
S grade tyres seem very close to each other. Different N tyres have more difference between them. N3s were closer to S1s than N2s!
VITG - A witch indeed! The poor wench had obviously chosen the wrong profession. I wonder if she was stupid enough to think she was doing you a favor or was she just a mean person?
Personally, I've never been able to do anything even close to "creative" with someone watching (let alone mocking) me and I don't think I'm the only one.
But it's great you've overcome your phobias.

Actually I've had my eye on Enthusia for a long time.
Just didn't have money, and didn't want to risk spending $40 on an unknown quantity.
Let me say, it is worth the risk if you have the DFP.
Very fun, frustrating at times, but very fun.
Gotta love the Dragon Range Touge course too, plus, it's got an E30 BMW M3, a Mclaren F1 road car, an M1, 3.0 CSL, great drift physics, and the Nurburgring!
It is a fun version of the Ring, not sure which one is more realistic, I know some corners of the Enthusia version match up to what I remember from vids better, but it's almost glass smooth, missing graffiti, and some of the spots where you catch huge air in GT4, or a little air in real life, are just smooth inclines.
Plus, I know it's silly, but I like the little speed lines effect at the edge of the screen.
Oh, and the sense of speed is awesome, blows GT4's right out of the water.
I will be playing both, as GT4 will probably have a lot more replay value.
But it will be nice to have the Dragon Range and a bunch of driftable cars when I get on an Initial D'ish trip.

I can remember the Griffith in earlier GT's as a nice little counter steering drifter in license tests. I had a bit of trouble adapting to the car at first as I felt the brakes were really “wooden” and it is way over geared, but it is certainly pretty quick. In the end I did a “mix and match” with the tyres to help me to get it to turn more easily. I found the S2's on the front and S1's on the rear worked well. The N3's were okay as well. I managed 7 ' 39 . 048 with the “cocktail” tyres and a tick over 8 ' 00 with N3's. Turning off the driving aids was a disaster for me as the braking became even more problematic leading to too many mistakes, so I wimped out and left well enough alone!! With some tuning ( probably only a FC gearbox and good brakes ) this car would fly. In fact I might do it tomorrow as the weather forecast is looking like an indoor sort of day. The Speed 12 and I have been circling each other warily for a while now, so I might actually bite the bullet and take that for a spin as well. Next I added every upgrade I could; racing suspension, racing brakes and controller, port & polish, engine balancing, increased displacement, stage 1 N/A tuneup, chip, stage 3 weight reduction, racing clutch, FC gearbox, racing flywheel, R3's and racing exhaust. I would have liked to add a wing as well to make it even more bizarre but it would not let me ( shame ). So final power = 30hp, weight 541kg With the auto box at 15 I managed 157km / hr on the downhill into FuchsrÖhre, not too shabby. I did not bother tweaking any of the upgrades and I cannot actually remember using the brakes at all, probably just backed off a bit for the tighter corners. The little Fiat handled really well, with just a nice amount of oversteer if pushed. It struggled a bit on the uphill sections, in fact at one stage I got out and gave it a push to help it along. After some very complex Astrophysics equations, I came to the conclusion that the Fiat is in fact an extrusion into our Space/ Time continuum, and in the dimension it comes from it is actually travelling at Warp 9, making it the fastest Car in the game.........by a very long way. (Also, unlike GT4, mowing the lawn will result in a HEAVY speed penalty no matter what you're driving). I have two problems with it. #1) Unless I'm not finding the right screen, there's no 1080i. Using my 55" TV, it's just too grainy to see anything clearly. I'm sure on smaller TV's its fine. #2) The Enthu-points thing is too confusing for an old fart like me. GT's simplicity is appealing to me. It IS kinda fun! I got hooked on it for about 3 hours last night. I'm not far enough into it to judge it properly yet. I haven't yet tried "Dragon Range". The feel of the road just isn't there, like in GT4, either. It does have force feedback, but not nearly as sophisticated. Your input is mostly determined visually. I went directly from Enthusia to driving a Merc SL500 with N3's on El Cap for a-spec points in GT4 (VERY nice handling car, BTW). There was definitely an "aaahhh" factor when I could, once again FEEL, through the steering wheel, the grip (or lack thereof) of the front or the back of the car as I drifted around hilly, high-speed corners. That sense of realism...of actually feeling the tires slipping or gripping...just isn't there (at all) in Enthusia. As I said, it IS a fun game, and I plan to play it a lot until I have to take it back. But from a technical standpoint, it's not even in the same ballpark with GT4. --- The best laid plans of mice and men, often go astray From: fed76 | Posted: 11/10/2005 7:35:21 AM | Message Detail My guesse for the WR is the Cizeta V16, but probably wrong. --- 100% Alberta Red Neck From: Onikaze | Posted: 11/10/2005 8:50:49 AM | Message Detail Which wheel were you using, and what setting did you have the Force Feedback on? I know if you don't have FF on Hard it loses a lot of road feel, but with the DFP and FF up all the way it totally blows GT4 away in the low speeds department. GT4 does have a better modeling of high speed physics, like 100 Mph+, but the actual feel of the cars balance shifting, the tires getting loose, and the fact that cars don't understeer ridiculously has turned me off GT4 just about entirely. When I picked it up, it was hard to figure out what was wrong, but it was because I had the feedback on Medium, and I was so used to how GT4 only tells you what the tires are doing, that I forgot that in reality you should be feeling what the weight of the car is doing, and then the tires. As I put it on another board, GT4 suggests that the car has mass, Enthusia tells you it does. Enthu-Points is just a way to keep tally of how much you screwed up in a race. The Odds thing is sort of confusing, but it just tells you how your car stacks up to the other cars individually, instead of giving one blanket total for all of them, like A-Spec points. I really think Enthusia should be getting a lot more praise than it is, but part of the problem is it is too accurate with the physics, and if you've driven a RWD car at the limits of adhesion, you know things can get tricky. GT4 has tuned in understeer, to make it easier to just pick up and drive for everyone, but half of my time tuning cars was spent trying to tune the understeer out, often going to ridiculous lengths using completely unrealistic settings just to get the cars to drive how I thought they were supposed too. In Enthusia, I pick it up, and I go, stock cars feel right, they push at the right times, they slide the right way, they bite you when you screw up, and they reward you for being smooth and staying calm. It's like being in a Twilight Zone Episode, all of us Enthusia fans have found an awesome game, but noone believes us.

The Cizeta is nimble in its own way, and the run from karussel to galkenkopf was a joy. But then, it is in almost every car, that's my favorte part of the track. Anyway. I haven't finished a clean lap yet, so I won't produce a lap time. Sackedagain's discussion of being a bad "test driver" has made me more critical of my sloppiness on the road. Using N tires and license test standards on laps can become tedious, but it's also enlightening. The challenge has added a new sense of fun to the game, as I've been revisiting my garage with standard tires and a simulation approach. Before I only drove S2's and was a good sport, if that makes sense. Peace. From: Soulidarity | Posted: 11/11/2005 7:32:22 AM | Message Detail The one thing I can say about the Cizeta is that it is two completely different cars with and without the driving aids. I know that all cars behave differently depending on whether or not driving aids are on, but the difference with the Cizeta is ridiculously huge, and reminds me a lot of the Spyker in that regard. I haven't driven it in awhile, but I'll get some seat time this weekend, and give further impressions. Just got back home. And back on the 'Ring. VITG - Tasmania sounds interesting. IF I ever get a job I MIGHT be able to save some money and then MAYBE someday I'll see the southern continent. It sounds like a perfect place to go to avoid the freezing winter here. TA03F - That's none too shabby in my book. Out of curiosity, I tried the car for two laps (max downforce, otherwise original settings) on R2s and got a 6'21.210 on what I thought was an ok lap. You seem like a potential 'Ringer, I suggest you grab a Cizeta and share the results. New blood is very welcome here, and you are fast. Write it long if you want to, or make it short if it suits you better. WR: I remember hating it when I first got it, but that was a looong time ago. I have two, one tuned and the other one stock. Funny, I've thought of picking it as a WR... I'm glad I fell in love with the Spirra, because the Cizeta made it anyway. For that kind of an engine, tall gears are more of an advantage than a disadvantage. I did a 8.9sec 1/4 mile in a modded Cizeta with nitrous, and I used just two gears. It was slower with three. Without nitrous, however, three gears seemed perfect. IRL, the car was labeled uncontrollable in high speeds IIRC something wrong with aerodynamics or something. Additional info: Later, Cizeta ran out of money. An italian composer, Moroder(and his loot), joined in. After that, the car was called Cizeta Moroder V16T. PCP BR: I tried the 500R and got a 12'34.378 on N1s. But more on that later. Besides, I'm already eyeing a Mazda Carol... Maybe its the lack of GT time as of late, or maybe I just need to suck less (as Oni would say), but I swear my laps in the Cizeta were just under 7'20, and nearly clean, when I was playing around with it in the past. Today I'm having trouble breaking 8 minutes, and regularly stopping for tea with Mr. Armco. What I love about the V16 is how it feels like a grip driver's dream at times, but it doesn't seem to take a whole lot to unbalance it, and send it spinning or guardrail hunting. I'll try for better laps tomorrow. I think I'll give Mr. P's BR a shot for now.

From: Soulidarity | Posted: 11/11/2005 4:46:12 PM | Message Detail BR I chose the Honda Life Step Van, which actually varies between 29 and 31 hp depending on which figure you go by. I chose to ignore the 31 and use it for the BR (I'm such a cheater). The rev limiter kicks in at a whopping 63 mph, and on an auto transmission (which is a bad habit I still haven't kicked to the curb) it loses a lot of speed and time through uphill stretches, most notably between Bergwerk and Karusell. After a nice leisurely Sunday drive with my family around the ring, little Billy clocked me at 14'15.640 for one lap. I think sub 14s are easily obtainable on a manual tranny, tho. Its strange driving a car that you almost never have to use the brakes with. From: oldguy1957 | Posted: 11/11/2005 8:11:22 PM | Message Detail Cizeta V16T Wow! Now that's a handful of car! It's like a S7 that actually turns when you want it to. There was no need to try it with N's. On S2's it felt about the same as most cars do with N2's. I have to say it was a lot of fun. Drifting Schwedenkruez at 130 mph is always an uplifting experience. It took me until the third lap to start to get a feel for how hard I could push it in the turns. I don't doubt you hit a 7'20 with it, Soulidarity. But the best I could pull was a 7'30.5. It's kinda strange. I've done a 7'24 in an M5 on several occasions, and I didn't seem to be pushing it all that hard. But in the Cizeta, that 7'30 felt like I was "on the edge" through most of the lap. I did have a few spins in the Cizeta, but only because I was doing something to it that SHOULD make it spin...like too much throttle out of a tight turn, or something. I never got the impression that it was going suddenly do something unexpected, like the SLR in M34, swapping ends if you breath on it the wrong way. I had the Cizeta out of shape several times at high speeds, and was able to bring it back under control just by easing off the gas and countersteering. Actually, it was more like two or three wheel-whipping panic-corrections...but it DID come back under control. Overall, I'd say I like it, although I think it would be much happier on R tires. --- The best laid plans of mice and men, often go astray From: Soulidarity | Posted: 11/11/2005 8:22:39 PM | Message Detail hmm, if you're managing 7'30, then I doubt my own memory of running around 7'20. From: Flibutz | Posted: 11/12/2005 8:44:14 AM | Message Detail WR: Cizeta V16T '94 in Alpine White I can't believe I didn't like the Cizeta when I first got it. It's fun! The rear tyres handle the power really well, converting it efficiently to acceleration. Furthermore, the tall gearing works well with the wide powerband. I must admit that it is a handful and it took me a while to make friends with it. But when I did, it became a good buddy, though sometimes it still is a bit cranky. What screwed up my early laps was often my braking too late, probably due to not realizing just how much speed it builds in a short time. But it does like early braking. That's because if you enter a corner too fast, there's no saving it. Being on the brakes more than slightly usually causes understeer. Sometimes the car just loses its balance when braking from high speeds, so hard braking needs to be done in a straight line. The power understeer was expected and manageable. Lift throttle oversteer was nice, though it took a bit of time to kick in after releasing the throttle. No idea why, but Mutkurve, one of my forever problem areas, wasn't too hard at all to clear with the V16T. Bergwerk was. As with many high-powered cars, the Pflanzgarten "straight" required immense concentration. I didn't spin out with the Cizeta, but could feel the cars potential for that. Best lap: 7'12.108 Overall, a fast and entertaining car. Besides I like the idea of having 16 cylinders behind my back. --- Currently suffering from the lack of a good sig. I'm making too many statements about a car before I've had enough time behind the wheel to really have a complete feel for it. I decided to pick up the Lotus Carlton from the used car lot on a whim, and it has really turned out to be a fun car. Its got decent power, decent grip, and has plenty of potential for drifters, though the oversteer is quite controllable most of the time. Most of the time lifting the throttle seems to produce understeer, though at times I've gotten some lift throttle oversteer as well, and I'm really not sure what's producing the different results. It definitely has throttle on power oversteer, which is fun to play around with, since you can countersteer out of it pretty easily. 1st gear has a lot of wheelspin, which can create problems through low speed corners, but it clears up completely once you hit second gear. Definitely a fun car. On the ring, I've been clocking in around 8 minutes, and Plantzgarten is eating me alive every time in the Carlton. I can't seem to get it right in this car. On the other hand, I seem to be handling Bergwerk exceptionally well for once (actually I seem to be driving the Carlton and the Cizeta identically in regards to these two corners). I've liked the Carlton so much that I've actually taken it into some of races that it qualifies for just for kicks, and for the first time driven outside of the ring with driving aids off and ballast added in. Perhaps I'll even start messing around with a manual tranny with this Lotus. As far as next week's WR goes, I'd like to pass it on to one of our known resident lurkers here. You've a crazy rich uncle that lives in Germany, and he's invited you to come visit for a holiday. Having heard of your affinity for driving, and living so close to the Nurburgring Nordshcliefe, he's granting you one lap in the exotic car of your choosing. There's a catch. He knows how dangerous the Nordschliefe is. If you hurt the car you choose, you have to work off the price of the car in his family business- not pleasant since the duties would involve a shovel and a gas mask. He has a jealous nitwit son that won't like his offer (B Spec Bob). Your lap time must be quicker than his "fast" (4) effort. However, if you can give your uncle a better lap time than his nitwit son, and also present him with a spotless car, you get to keep it, and also receive a cash inheritance equal to the value of the car. So here's the deal- you must spend at least 100,000 (but no more than 1,000,000) cr on the car. It must be a new production car that money can buy, and you must use N3 tires. You get a 500cr budget for modifications, but you may only spend it on rims. Any country is fine. Once you've chosen the car, let Cousin (B-Spec) Bob have a lap at setting 4. Then, take your turn. If you hit the Armco, even once, even only a little, the BR is over. Feel free to post the sale price of the car, as that will help cut down on the amount of shoveling owed. If you run a clean lap, and beat the nitwit, you win. Feel free to post your lap time. It's that easy. Or is it? The idea is credited to sackedagain's comments about how terrible we'd be as test drivers, since we don't have to regard our physical safety nor the value of the merchandise we're driving. --- For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. It sounds easy, but I guess I'll have to see. Not having a test lap to feel the car out will make a big difference. It's been my experience that Bob has quite a hard time with fast cars on N tires. If he ends up in the armco or the kitty litter a few times, it will make it a lot easier. I think I'll go buy me a Merc! --- A.K.A. To clarify- by "new" I meant "from dealership", so if you pick a classic, that's fine, as long as it meets the other parameters (price, N3's, not a racecar, etc). And please, no driving aids. Peace. From: oldguy1957 | Posted: 11/13/2005 10:26:39 PM | Message Detail When I arrived in Germany, the first thing Uncle Adolf did was to show me the brand spanking new Mercedes SL55 AMG he had just bought in a color he called Tektitgrau. It looked dark grey, to me. But, whatever... Unfortunately, he had given his son Bob $500US to buy some custom rims before bringing it home. Bob picked out some "Ray's 005" rims. The red ones. "To go with the red leather interior," he said. It looked a bit on the gaudy side, to me. But who was I to complain. Uncle Adolf was going to let me take it for a spin on the famed Nurburgring Nordschlief!! But first, to keep from hurting his feelings, he had to let Bob take it for a spin. Bob actually did better than I expected him to. But then, my expectations were pretty low. I didn't really expect him to bring it back with all the fenders still on it...but he did! He turned in a fairly respectable time of 7'58.284. He hopped out with a big grin on his face, and said "Beat THAT, old man!" I bit down on my tongue to keep from telling him to go beat something else. But after all, I was a guest and had to be polite. I decided to let my driving do the talking for me. I jumped in and started out pretty carefully, not wanting to damage Uncle Adolf's nice, new car. But by the time I reach Schwedenkruez I had a pretty good feel for it, and those 500 horses wanted to run...so I let 'em. I was wishing Uncle Adolf had spent a little extra money for the low-profile sports tires. But he didn't, so I made those skinny highway tires sing for me. I took it a little easy in some the scary places...Mutkurve, for example...but really got on it through the technical section. I pulled back in to the parking area after posting a 7'54.519, (almost 4 seconds quicker than Bob) with nary a scratch on it. Although the temperature gauge was reading a bit hot...like Bob's temper at having an "old man" beat his time. I just smiled and handed the keys back to Uncle Adolf, and thanked him for an experience I shall never forget. Actually, I think it would have been more appropriate to have US drive the car first, and then nitwit Bob. Seeing Bob's split times made it easy to just build up a 4 or 5 second cushion, and then drive very conservatively. I would have pushed it harder in few places had I not known that I had the aforementioned "cushion". Also, no matter what you tell yourself, you still aren't risking car and life while sitting in your Lazyboy. I tried to imagine I had my son in the car with me, which slowed me down even more. But if I had crashed, I just would have had to report to you guys that I had failed. In real life it would be a much more serious matter. It's hard to compare the two. All-in-all, it was a fun BR, though. Removing the option of bouncing off a guardrail or two really does slow one down. --- A.K.A. I'd always wanted to see the land of my ancestors, and I was making the most of the opportunity. I partied some, blasted down the Autobahn a few times, and mooned a Berlin cop. After my uncle bailed me out of jail, he took me to Nurburg. Knowing I was a big racing nut, and that's when he showed me his newest pride and joy--a Mercedes SLR McLaren. He told me quite simply--Beat your cousin Johann around the Nordschliefe and you can keep it. You break it though, and you buy it. My uncle might be generous, but apparently he's also seen me drive. Bad news for me. Worse news is I've seen Johann drive. I guess growing up around this circuit gives him a bit of an unfair advantage. I complained to my uncle about this, but he wouldn't budge. Driving an unfamiliar car on a track I've never actually seen in real life was a challenge I wasn't sure I was up to. And to make matters even more heavily stacked against me I'd only get one lap to prove my worth, while Johann already knew the track inside and out. I watched Johann round the track with a level of skill that I could only dream of attaining. When he crossed the line with a time of 7:49, I knew already I'd be leaving empty-handed. Instead, I focused on NOT WRECKING THE CAR--because I had no desire to shovel pig excrement for the rest of my life. When I exited the track after my single blistering lap of 9:08, all I could hear was Johann screaming with laughter at my hamfisted effort. "Did you even get it out of second gear?" he asked, not even trying to suppress his laughter. "At least I brought it back in one piece," I responded. "That car's worth more than my life, no way am I going to wreck it." From: ciscrack | Posted: 11/14/2005 11:37:23 AM | Message Detail So, after a long and tedious adventure of a trip to Germany involving a bus ride through the Oakland ghetto to the airpot, am missed flight resulting in then having to take three connecting flights to New york and then a 10hr. or so flight to Germany, I finally made it to my uncle Nemecio's house. He was stationed over there during WWII, got a fairly wealthy german girl pregnant, and the rest is history. Anyways, he tells me that in the morning he's gonna take me out to his garage to show me his wonderful car collection, let me choose one, and engage in a competition that my cousin, Bartolo, has challenged me to. Bart gets to take the car out first, record his best time, then I follow up to beat his time. If I do, and return it in perfect condition, I get the car. Sweet! Next morning I wake up, Bart and Nemecio are still sleeping. And continue to do so until 1PM. These idiots stayed up 'til 4 in the mornin' drinking tequila and Jaegerbombs. Anyways, they finally get up and we head out to this massive warhouse he calls a garage. We go inside and it's like walking into an exotic car dealer. There's an Vanquish, a 430 Spider, a GT500, a BMW M1, his friends' McLaren F1, etc... I go all the way to the back and I see two Ford GT's, one in MarkII black clearcoat, the other white, with blue stripes. I get closer and notice the black one's sittin' on 20" gold Dina's. You know how us mexicans' like the bling. Awww...Nemecio, I wanna take that one out. "Alright", he says, "Let's go". We get out to the track, Bartolo get's in and off he goes. After he takes off, my uncle starts explaining to me that if I damage the car in any way, shape or form, I have to work off the debt before I can go home. Oh, what have I gotten myself into. I gotta drive a high-powered, really expensive exotic car around a 13 mile track I've never seen before, faster than my cousin who drives it every weekend, and without damage. Right! So here comes the black GT with gold D's, and he crosses the line in... 7'20.338. Hmmm... 7' 20 .338!!!! 13 miles!!! Okay, that's umm, what like, averaging over 100mph. Okay, the fastest I've ever driven a car is 110 in my moms' Civic. And that was in a straight line. So I get in, my stomach in knots, ready to attempt the impossible. I start off, ooohh nice power, and across the starting line. First turn, whhhoa! Braked a little to late. So I'm going pretty well, getting a feel for what this thing can do. Not bad for the first few miles, a few minor off-road excusions, but nothing that can't be cleaned off. So I come to this right turn that dives down and leads into a left hairpin. Aaaackk! That was damn close, got out of it, speeding toward the next left, try to brake, but, Whhooa!,Aahhhh! Bump! Okay! Now hopefully I can get back to the starting line without anything else going wrong. I continue on, being as careful as possible, up to Karussel or whatever. Now I don't know what happened here. It seemed like I was doing fine, but I kept drifting right, even though I wasn't gassin' it. Fortunately, I just barely missed scraping the Armco. I start up the long uphill, into the next left-right, and...Ohhhh! Too much speed again. Now I scrubbed up the left side of the car. After recovering from that, I get on my way, no more craches or scrubs, just a little more grass and mud slingin'. Then I come into those last few turns before the line. I was apparently havin' too much fun doin' 190 that I misjudged my braking point, again, and crashed up the front of the car. After coming around that last turn and seeing my uncles' jaw damn near fall off his head, my time was.... 7'23.173. I get out, my uncles' yellin' at me, but I'm so happy that if I hadn't crashed 3 times, I woulda beaten that ****ers' time. Oh well. Now I gotta work off the price of the car, $149,880. Hmmm.... I'll just summarize it instead. Soul and Oni (he's not participating so he can be an honorary participant in my story get out of the last day of school before summer, and vow to make this a summer to remember. The next day Soul receives a letter from his Uncle Otto, the billionaire tycoon and insanely fast mechanic (I even referenced someone else's story about him sleeping in the shop from time to time), living in Germany and running a tuner shop as a hobby. In the letter, he puts forth the challenge, and Soul and Oni fly out to Nurburg. Soul briefly meets a gorgeous girl, who turns out to be his jackass cousin Lukas' girlfriend. He treats her like dirt, Soul treats her like a princess, she falls for Soul, but doesn't leave Lukas for Soul until after the competition when he finally steps over the line. Of course Oni finds himself a girl as well. As for the competition itself, Lukas smashed up the car pretty good at Adenaur Forst, but heroically pulled it across the finish line at 7'40.762. I jumped in and immediately was too late on the brakes for the first corner, and ended up on the grass, avoided the armco, and spun out, putting me more than 8 seconds behind. I made a careful but fast run from Hatzenbachbogen to Fuchsrohre, then tried to slow down for Adenaur Forst, but went over the crest slightly too fast, trailed a wheel into the grass, and trashed the car. Definitely not a fatal crash, but enough to total disable the car to be sure. Being that its a 400k+ car, Uncle Otto is going to have me every summer for the rest of my life :/ --- Currently working on FFX: Tidus SCC, braving the Lightning Plains. From: viperinthegrass | Posted: 11/14/2005 9:29:19 PM | Message Detail WR™ Cizeta in Red ( Very Italian ) I did have one in my garage but I had not driven it before so it took a couple of laps to adapt mainly because it is a bit bigger and heavier than the Mrkinder I have been driving lately. This probably contributes to that feeling of being “on the edge” a lot as reported by Oldguy. With Flibutz's advice reminding me about early braking I did okay as clean laps were rewarded with good times. Grassy laps were 7.41.00 & 7.35.203. First clean lap 7 ' 32 . 633 was set up by a good first sector where I could get in front of Ghost and see where I was going! I did wimp out at Plantzgarten and on the left at end of DH though! Next lap I got another excellent start and also did really well at the slow Adenaur Forst & Fuchsrohre corners. The section from Brunnchen to DH was a real Joy as I did it perfectly, smooth and (very) fast. Once onto DH I did not back off until the first right ( Hohenrain ). This gave me a 7 ' 28 . 535 I will definitely try more laps later as there is more to squeeze out of this excellent but challenging car. Soulidarity – It is funny what we do not see sometimes. I had always registered the Cizeta badge as being Three Wolves, which they are quite clearly not! Well done, nice selection. I have just finished the Formula GT series, I've got wads of cash, so, I have been buying up as well, and found a Lotus Carlton straight away. Very nice. I thought I would buy lots of cars rather than just one or two ubermissiles. I reckon the Sauber will keep me entertained for while anyroad! BR™ A fun BR Muse, but very nerve wracking, I was concentrating till my eyes bled!! Anyway heres my report : I always said it would happen. I was right. Here I was “right up to my neck in it” shovelling Pig**** . All because of the Idiot Son of my Crazy Uncle. ( cookies if you can place the quote) This was going to be the intro to my BR story as I failed to beat Idiot Bob with a pristine car. However I succeded! I think. I will give you the details and let you all decide. My spending spree included an Aston Martin Vanquish. Perfect. A nice big, hopefully stable, British Sports Limo. Malham White, fitted with BBS 014 Wheels & N3's, 490hp after oil change. I sent Idiot Bob off at increased speed ( 4 ) and watched in growing alarm as “Bob” put in a flawless lap of 8 ' 09 . 444. My turn, also a flawless lap but only a 8 ' 11. 013 I kept going and managed another perfectly clean lap of 8 ' 06 . 756 but all too late as I needed to do that with only one lap. Oh well. Then I realised something, I had forgotten to turn off Driver Aids, Dummkopf! So I had to do it all again, talk about mounting pressure! I made the appropriate changes and sent Bob off again. Very interesting, a 8 ' 09 . 444 identical with his first effort. Hmm. So off I went and put in a perfect 8 ' 02 . 224 It really is a nice stable car, very predictable handling and pretty good brakes for a heavy car ( 1835 kg ) I think in this car I would have earned my money as a test driver no worries. So what do you guys think, did I succeed or was it all over after my first lap? P.S Much later today; This Morning, I have used driving these cars and writing up the details as a distraction because my cat, Fatima, is at the Vets, very sick, and I am waiting for results. So rather than pace up and down I have turned to the Game for comfort, so please excuse me if it seems a bit disjointed. Just got back to the B & B after dropping Uncle Mort off at his hotel. Haven't seen him since our wedding 18 (17?) years ago, but he hasn't changed at all. No one at the Fuchsrohre had to pay a dime for food or drinks. He picked up the tab for the whole place. By the time we left, he was as drunk as he was at the rehearsal dinner. Remember that? Yeah, I know, kind of hard to forget. But at least he only spend one night in jail. As planned, we spent the day at the Ring. Uncle Mort spent most of the time in the parking lot. Seems like everybody is his best friend. He drove a lap or two early, then never got in the car again. Fortunately for me--you know how scared I was about driving in traffic based on my virtual knowledge of the Ring--he brought along his granddaughter, Elisabeth, who knows the track. I don't know if I ever told you about her. I met her when she was about 12--what a pain in the arse. Well, it's 20 years later and she hasn't changed much. Still quick to needle, always talking and knows it all. Still, she's got men hanging all over her. She's got red curly hair, pale skin like Nicole Kidman, and curves to match the track. Uncle Mort brought the Jaguar. Will it mean anything to you if I say it was an 2002 XKR R-Performace? Probably not. Let's just say it cost a bundle. Not Uncle Mort's most expensive car, but he seems very attached to it. So Betty--she seems to hate it when I call her that, so I did, often--did about five laps around the Ring with me as a passenger. They tell you not to time your laps here because of the high mortality rate (sorry, promised not to mention that). But I timed her last circuit at 8:15. Then she turned the car over to me. God, I felt like an idiot. The car handled great, running quiet and fast. BUt when we got to Hocheichen, Betty let out a loud sarcastic yawn. I felt compelled to pick up the pace. That was a mistake. Riding into Schwedenkreuz at around 130 (I guessing at the speed because I had my eyes on the road) the Jag went a little sideways. Then a lot sideways. And, to make a long story short, it wasn't like drifting the Miata. Much more weight. Much more speed. God bless Betty. She talked me through it or I might have killed us both. The car got into the grass on the right side of the track. Then went sideways across the exit of Aremberg and into the kitty litter. Stopped just short of the railing. How close? She had to get out my side of the car because her door wouldn't open. Anyway, I didn't wreck the car. Betty told the story about 100 times at the bar. Making fun of the GT4 Ringer losing it before I was 2:00 minutes into the course. Guess I deserved it. Just glad I didn't dent Uncle Mort's pride and joy. I'm beat. I'll write tomorrow. Love you. In addition to the endurance races, the Ring is the site of many one and two lap races. I think we pick five races and run them for A-Spec points. Five straight races, with only one shot at each. Clear risk/reward for using slower cars. Sticking with our general approach to these things, there is no prize for getting the most A-Spec points. We report back with race stories and results. Back in 2004, I was racing in the big leagues, taking on all challengers in a variety of races, and beating them all. My BMW and I were an unstoppable team. Then came the race on the Nurburgring. I hadn't driven on the course in a while, but it was a race among some of the best in the world, and I couldn't resist a challenge. After all, I was one of the best in the world as well, and I didn't want to disappoint. However, such carelessness was what brought me down. It was the last lap, and I was in second place. I tried to pass the leader, confident in my victory. Unfortunately, I didn't notice the turn, so while he braked and cruised around it, I ran straight into the wall. My car was completely trashed, and my racing career was over. By 2005, I was back to my normal self.. All my injuries were healed, thankfully, but I was now living a boring life back in the USA, a mechanic in a local shop instead of the racing legend I used to be. That was until I got a letter from my rich uncle Scott from Germany, the person who first brought me into the racing world. There was a plane ticket in the envelope, and the enclosed note said to meet him at his place, near the Ring. I took my chances, and flew over to see what he wanted. Apparently, he wanted me to race again, and he had quite a deal set up. I was to do a time trial against my cousin Ben on the Ring, with the winner keeping the time trial car. The car was a brand new BMW M5, and I had to say that I was excited. I've always had a thing for BMWs, so I agreed to his challenge. I couldn't wreck this thing though, or else I would pay dearly. So it was off to the race track. Ben, being very impatient, went first and sped around with a time of 7'56.101. I knew it wasn't a great time, but I hadn't driven on the track in a very long time, so I was a little worried. However, once I got back into the car, I lost that fear. I was a little shaky, and had come between inches of the wall near the end of the race, but I got through without any damage to the car. Even when I wasn't doing my best, I was still better then my cousin Ben, as I finished just barely ahead with a time of 7'55.834. I met my uncle afterwards, and ignored Ben as he moaned about how he could possibly lose after all his practice on the Ring. I tried to hand over the keys, but he told me to keep them. He said that I did win the challenge after all, and that the car was mine to keep. It was time to go back to doing what I did best: racing. --- From: wanderingmuse22 | Posted: 11/15/2005 8:14:03 PM | Message Detail My crazy Unlce Milton tossed me the keys to his million dollar baby- the '98 Nissan R390 GT1 Road Car. It's a razor on BBS 018 wheels. "Don't scratch it and it's yours." he said. "And if I do?" He flashed the grin I'd grown to love and fear. I wish he'd threatened me instead. Before I could even read the key chain my nitwit cousin Holden punched me in the arm, "Race you for it." he said. His lazy stare dared me to strike back. He knows I won't, but in years past I might've. Funny thing is, I own him. He learned how to drive sooner, but I learned how to drive better. "Alright, but I'm first" was my reply. There's no way I was gonna let him waste my million dollar ride before I'd even turned a lap, not with the 'Ring so close. The car was as good as mine, right? How could it not be, right? The R390 wanted me. Everything I demanded on the track was given, and then some. It delivered the very best acceleration, braking, and the handling: sliding around a bend and planting with perfect grip. It handled better than I drove. The car had one flaw- top end. How a million dollar car could have too short a top gear was puzzling, but it didn't matter. I finished a perfect pflantzgarten run and was planning how to feather the throttle down Dottinger Hohe, I was mapping in my mind what kind of gear box it needed and perhaps even a new turbo when... I overstepped my bounds at Galkenkopf... and smacked the Armco. Sigh. Peace. --- For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. So there was the challenge, pick a car from my eccentric Uncles impressive collection ( which he never drove- some still had 0 miles on the clock) and beat my cousin in a one lap flyer. I could see Ullrich, dressed in his racing suit ( poser !) standing behind my Uncle and smirking.”He is only a car detailer for Avis, this will be so easy”. I had always disliked Ullrich( or “Bob” as he liked to be known ) ever since the days as a boy I had been sent to my Uncles Pig Farm for Summer holidays. Ullrich was one of those really annoying, spoilt brat kids, always following me around and repeating everything I said, and as for getting me into trouble, he was an expert. Things would happen, he would vanish and I would be left to carry the can. This culminated in the “incident” involving Pig****, my Uncles gumboots and a false fire alarm. Although sent home in disgrace (despite my protestations of innocence), I can still remember my Uncle standing on the platform as the Train pulled away, that half smile on his face. I had not been back for fifteen years. They say revenge is a dish best served cold, here was my chance to sort “Bob” out once and for all. “Yes” I said, “I'll do it” “You have first pick then, and may the best man win” White '67 Toyota 2000 GT ( a cool $160,000 worth) 1120kg & 165 hp, fitted with Enkei 033 wheels and N3's. Sweet. Bob put on the rest of his racegear and headed off and returned exactly 9 ' 17 . 468 seconds later, “Beat that” he smirked. So I did, with a wonderfully clean 9 ' 08 . 490 Bob was apoplectic, talk about a tantrum! “Double or nothing” he sputtered, “only this time we will use my car!!” “Okay”, I said nonchalantly inspecting my nails “you are on” Berlina Black '02 Honda NSX Type R ( $119, 570 ) 1270 kg & 310 hp O.Z. 012 wheels ( I had to give him that, it was a nice looking car ) Bob headed off and he was so steamed, he left a trail of rubber 50 metres long. “Good” I thought “Maybe he'll crash and make this easy”. No such luck, he put in a wild but clean lap of 8 ' 05 . 895 My turn. This was it, my chance for revenge, “Stay frosty” I thought, “ no mistakes” And I did'nt! That car was one sweet motor, I got into a nice rhythm, fast and smooth,I never felt any danger of fouling up, this car was easy to drive fast. And I was certainly faster than Bob, peeling off an 8 ' 00 . 342 As I pulled up next to my Uncle and Ullrich, I felt a massive wave of relief and satisfaction.Ullrich started to whine and protest but my Uncle cut him off with a gesture, “before you start you should know that your cousin indeed started as a “mere” detailer, but through hard work and dedication he now manages the entire Luxury and Exotic Rental fleet and has probably driven more top flight cars than you have had Bratwursts!! I goggled at my Uncle, he must have been keeping tabs on me all those years. Well! “Now get that ridiculous suit off, get changed, we have some cheques to write” Ullrich, still grumbling, went to pull on his Gucci loafers, there was an odd squelching noise as he did so and a very familiar smell came wafting up. I turned to see the half smile on my Uncles face replaced by a wide grin, followed by huge peals of laughter!! “ I always knew you were innocent, but Ullrich was never Man enough to own up, so I believe we have both had our revenge, Ja? Oldguy – thanks for the second chance! Nice work Muse, an excellent idea for a BR Well done Imperialdramon9 too, a good start for your 'Ring career! Since you pick the car to use in each race, you set the bar as high or low as you want. These are the rules: a. Only one try at each race. No practicing. If you don't like the line-up or the A-Spec points, quit before the bell rings. Then find a new car or line-up. Once the bell sounds, your choice of car is official. Finish the race. b. If qualifying is permitted, you may qualify only for position. You cannot change cars or modify the car once you have started qualifying. c. Do not race your potential car in other races in the series to check its performance. Your choice will be based on the line-up against you and the A-Spec points available. Report back with results. I'm hoping we hear some good race stories and learn something along the way. Friendly competition, as always. Here are the five series with Ring races that I've picked for this challenge: 1. First race: World Classics. Car: 1970 Plymouth Superbird It's got a FC 6-speed, stage 3 lightweight and every go-fast part you can buy. But it was no match for the single decent car in the race-- an A/C Cobra 427. I got stuck behind some twink in an ancient Skyline who was all over the track--I couldn't get around him, and by the time I did that Cobra was more than 20 seconds ahead. I never closed the gap. Final position: 2nd. Points awarded: 0 out of 1. Second Race: BMW Club M Car: BMW M3 CSL Bone stock. No matter what, you're up against at least one M5 and at least one M3 GTR--both far superior cars to this. Add in the AI's perfect driving and my hamfisted imitation of driving, and you have a recipe for disaster. All I could do was watch the AI cars pull further and further away until I was alone on the track. Points awarded: 0 out of 89.--6th Place Third Race: European Classic Car: Ginetta G4 This was actually almost a competitive race. I had to reset the lineup a couple of times to get rid of a 300SL and a Cobra, but once they were gone it was stacked pretty heavily in my favor. The only moderate threat was a Lotus Elan, and surely I could do better than it, right? Wrong. I was in second by the time I got to Aremburg, and the Lotus was a mere 3 seconds ahead. By the time I hit the Karussell it was 11 seconds ahead. Kliener Karussell, 13 seconds ahead. It finished 12 seconds ahead (made up a second on the front straight, woo frickety hoo). Points awarded: 0 out of 4.--2nd Place Fourth Race: Pan Euro Car: Aston Martin DB9 Outclassed, outgunned, outrun. You're tired of hearing about my crushing defeats by now, so I'll cut to the chase. I never stood a chance. Points awarded: 0 out of 174.--6th Place Fifth Race: GT All-Stars Car: Aston Martin Vanquish Points Awarded: 0 out of 200. 6th Place Total Points: 0 Total Time: Don't ask. From: sackedagain | Posted: 11/16/2005 9:29:02 AM | Message Detail It occurs to me that a couple points might win this thing. It is easy to lose a one-lap or two-lap race with no second chances... From: Flibutz | Posted: 11/16/2005 9:55:23 AM | Message Detail BR: I was spending my summer vacation in Germany with my rich uncle and his son, Berndt, who was called Bob by everyone. They had thought up a challenge for me, and I accepted it without thinking twice. The name of the game was that I was to race Bob with a car of my choice, and could keep the car if I won. If crashed it, I'd be shoveling biodynamic fertilizer for a looong time. I wanted to race the Jaguar XJ220, but my uncle turned me down. "Unacceptable, he said. You know, it's a legendary car. They don't make them anymore so it'd be too hard to find a replacement. Tell you what, race the Pagani Zonda C12S instead, it's just as good, but I can order a new one if you crash it!" That was fine by me. Berndt went first. He crashed the car at Adenauer-Forst but somehow the car wasn't damaged much and he still managed a 7'34.722. He seemed to be on the edge all the time, but his computerlike reflexes saved him from further accidents. It was my turn. Everything went well, until I dropped a rear wheel on grass at the exit of Schwedenkreuz and spun out. Luckily the car remained intact, but now I had a lot of time to make up. Frustrated, I accelerated out of Aremburg. I was way too nervous now, fell victim to violent oversteer and ended up ass first into the armco at A-F. Oh dear. I was in luck, as I survived without a scratch. But the Zonda didn't. The car was totaled and I was looking at several years of shovel duty. I think I'll do The Ring Race Challenge next. --- Currently suffering from the lack of a good sig. From: jwrebholz | Posted: 11/16/2005 12:27:55 PM | Message Detail I'm glad you enjoyed my torture, sacked. Even with only 1 A-spec point, victory is anything but guaranteed. Starting dead last has a lot to do with that. Couple a narrow track with a poor-handling, overpowered road rocket and well...If I'd started in first or second I'd probably have had a good chance of winning. Having to get around all the pluggers doomed me. And the final race was basically me giving up. I already knew looking at the lineup that I'd never win because I have a hard-enough time controlling road cars on the 'Ring--a race special would be pointless. From: Imperialdramon9 | Posted: 11/16/2005 1:52:20 PM | Message Detail I personally don't struggle too much with Nurburgring. Sure, different cars still pose a challenge, but playing on the Ring lots with Project Gotham Racing 2 and Forza Motorsport (I've had my Xbox a lot longer then my PS2) has given me lots of practice with the course. The biggest problem I have on it in GT4 is adjusting to the track width, since the other two games seem to give you more room for error. I can imagine qualifying here makes a big difference in that aspect, because passing is harder to do without crashing. This track requires lots of handling, otherwise you lose lots of precious time from the almost inevitable crashes. I'm interested in trying this RR challenge, though I can't right now since I still have a bunch of advanced level races to do before I get to race in the Extreme Hall. Shouldn't be hard, but I doubt I'll find the time to finish this week. --- From: sackedagain | Posted: 11/16/2005 2:23:57 PM | Message Detail Oh, that rule about qualifying is moot. Can't qualify for single race even if its in the series... From: Onikaze | Posted: 11/16/2005 3:05:14 PM | Message Detail The track is also ALOT more accurate than PGR2 or Forza, as they made those tracks a good deal wider and longer to facilitate multiplayer. From: Imperialdramon9 | Posted: 11/16/2005 3:09:12 PM | Message Detail I think its just their way of making sure we don't get extremely frustrated if a good player gets in front and is capable keeping anyone from passing them. The extra width given gives you a much better chance. I've heard plenty about how this version is more realistic, and I don't doubt it. Otherwise, I imagine Polyphony would also have made the track wider, so as to not frusturate the player too much. --- From: sackedagain | Posted: 11/16/2005 3:35:06 PM | Message Detail Ring Races Some flaws in this game I made up...mostly in choice of races. But still a challenge. Here are my results: Race 1: Professional Events, World Classics Wary of the A/C Cobra that did in JW, I shuffled the line-up to get rid of it. A lot like getting rid of cockroaches. I ran the Chevelle SS 454 against a Spider, Skyline Sport Coupe, G4, Toyota 200GT and Corvette Coupe. The race ended after Aremberg. I had moved up on the lead pack--the Spider, G4 and the Toyota-- coming out of Hocheichen. I led into Schwedenkreuz, where those three and the Coupe caught up. We went four across at the end of Schwedenkreuz. You might have noticed there isn't enough room for that...The G4 spun out into the kitty litter, the 2000GT smacked me in the side and wobbled out of the way. The Coupe avoided the melee but slowed...I powered out of it and grabbed the lead. Race over. Time: 9:02 Points: Three. Race 2: M Club I was surprised to see 15 points with the M-5 racing against the usual suspects: CSL, GTR, M5, Coupe and M3. The CSL provided the most competition. I passed the M5 on the inside at left-hander before Ex-Muhle and then followed the CSL to Galgenkoph. As I hoped, I slipped by the CSL on the straight and won by two seconds. Time: 7:58 Points: 15 Race 3: Europe Classic There was no need to have this race in the mix. Sorry about that. No Cobra again, but I forgot about the SL Coupe, which beat my Guilia Sprint Speciale by 23 seconds. If you haven't driven the Alfa Romeo yet, try it. Why hasn't this been a WR™? Also, odd start. The AI squeezed me into fourth before we even reached the start line. Time: 23 seconds back for 2d place Points: 0 of 13 Race 4: Pan Euro Championship I pulled the M5 back out. I had to restart the game about two weeks ago, BTW. Had not driven the M5 for months. What a beauty. I was up against the SL600, SL65 AMG, BTR, RS 6 and the Cizeta. The BTR took an early lead, I closed near Adenauer, pleased to see the AI has the same troubles with the BTR that I do. I decided to trail the BTR and wait for another mistake. It came at Hohenrain, where he flopped against the armaco long enough for me to get by. I held the lead until Bergwerk, where he passed me smartly on the inside. We battled almost all the way to Klostertal, where I got the better of some shoulder rubbing that the BTR initiated. The BTR ended up falling to fourth place and the SL65 and Cizeta passed him. It must have been a real battle because I finished 28 seconds ahead of the Merc. Time: 15:26 (7:46 and 7:40) Points: 107 (woo hoo) Race 5: GT All Stars I took a flyer on the GT LM Race Car Spec II. I flushed the line-ups to get rid of the obvious problems (Minolta, Sauber, etc). Unfortunately, I hadn't seen the BMW V12 for awhile. Ouch. I had third sewn up until the McLaren F1 GTR ran me off the road at Hohenrain. There was a fist fight in pit lane at the end of the race. I suppose this ring race challenge will officially signal the end of my no-buy game. I've been buying up cars like crazy, but abstaining from using them for anything that I have not yet finished. Now I'm going to have to buy a truck or use my Ram for the truck race, then finish the Professional hall. I'll try to at least get these two done tonight, so I can work on this before the weekend.

Ring Challenge results:
World Classics- Used Alfa Sprint Speciale for 90 pts.
I was able to pass the pack early and build up a 5 sec. lead. Just before Karussel, the '63 Corvette had closed the lead to 2 secs. I was off to the races after that finishing 8.6 secs. ahead of the 'vette. 90 of 90 pts.
M Club- Used M3 coupe for 135 pts.
Another very close race with me being able to close the gap before the lead car would take off again. Came in 2nd. Forgot to note lead car. 90 of 225 pts.
Euro Classics-Used Karmann Ghia for 82 pts.
Very tight, tough race, with me trailing 5 secs. behind the whole time. Came in 2nd to a Lotus Elan. Kept switching lineups to avoid the dreaded 3some here. 90 of 307 pts.
Pan Euro- Used M3 GTR for 91 pts.
No contest! Took the lead quickly and never looked back. 24 secs. ahead after the first lap, I just cruised through the second to finish 27 secs. ahead. 181 of 398 pts.
GT All Stars- Used Gillet Vertigo for 42 pts.
Uhhhh....... I would rather not talk about it. Hey Uncle! I broke your car! 181 of 440 pts.
From: jwrebholz | Posted: 11/16/2005 4:22:42 PM | Message Detail In a somewhat poor attempt to assemble the remains of my shattered confidence (thanks a lot SA) I decided to pull cars out of my garage at random and drive them. I'd just go back a page or so from where I was last time, pick something and drive it. Some of what I found was relatively surprising. Some of it wasn't.
The first car I picked was the Mercedes SL65 AMG. Christ, what a pig. This car is an engine with 4,000 pounds of car built around it--it's an overstuffed, overpowered, overweight barge, and you feel every ounce of this car's hefty curb weight. I've seen snowplows that don't push this much. I was in the grass (and in the Armco) as often as on the track, and my lap time was a positively abysmal 8:44 (leaving a path of destruction in my wake)
The second car I drove was the '02 Chrysler Prowler. With a (relatively) wimpy V6 and a wide-ratio 4-speed I expected this thing to be a dog, too--until I got it on the track. Yes, the car's 4-speed Autostick had very wide ratios, but they were well-chosen. A 130 MPH top end was achieved on the main straight, limited mostly by drag. What also surprised me was just how well it handled. I guess having HUGE tires helps quite a bit in that regard, as I had loads of traction. (The rears are 20" inside diameter--the first production car to fit tires of that size). My time was a still kinda slow, but clean 8:35.
The third car I grabbed was my Infiniti G35 sedan. This model year only came with a 5-speed automatic (the 6-speed wasn't added to the US market G until MY 2004), but it didn't matter so much, as the ratios once again were chosen quite well for the car. I've driven (and liked) the G35 before, so it was more a refresher for me than anything else. There's a fair amount of slop in the suspension (it IS a luxury car after all) but it's taut enough to keep the car planted. This was another car I enjoyed on the 'Ring, but I'd probably enjoy it more if the springs were a little tighter. I clocked an 8:31 in this car without too much difficulty.
It seems though I saved the best for last. The final car I brought out was a 1997 Acura NSX--otherwise known as heaven on four wheels. Simply put, the car just goes where it's pointed. It doesn't argue, it doesn't complain, it just does what you tell it to. The gearbox is perfect. The suspension is perfect. You can grip-drive or drift this car with the standard suspension and S2 tires without difficulty. It's just a refreshingly easy car to drive, with none of the twitchiness of its MR forebears *coughlancia*. Out of the four cars I drove, I probably enjoyed this one most of all. My lap time of 7:53 reflects that, most likely.
(Note: All cars are dead stock aside from an oil change) ---

Five Ring Circus
World Classics:
I went with a supercharged ’69 ‘vette because I know this race always has one rabbit and 4 tortoises. I also knew it would give low points, but I was disappointed that it was only ONE! Had I known that, I would have gone with S3’s instead of S2’s. But I guess that’s part of the challenge…guessing what your points are going to be before actually entering. My rabbit? The AC Cars 427 S/C. He, of course, jumped out to a whale of a lead before I made my way past the turtles. I caught him and got on his bumper by Karussell, but then he pulled back out to a 3 second lead though the technical section, which he maintained to and through D-H. In an act of desperation, I used the guided missile strategy in the final turns, and nailed him in the rear quarter-panel. I then beat him to the line by 2 seconds for unfulfilling 1-point win.
Points: 1
Club M
Car: M3--The M5 was starting in 4th, so I went with that lineup, even though the M3 GTR was on the pole. I was picking them off one at a time early. But when I reach the M Coupe, which was in second place, I tried passing on the outside of Schwedenkruez and got shoved off into the grass. I made a nice save, sliding back on the track in 4th place, just behind the M Coupe and the M5 which had passed both of us in the confusion. I got back past them and caught and passed the GTR by cutting inside of him in the sharp right between Mutkurve and Karussell. By Galgenkopf (last turn before D-H) I had built up more than a 2 second lead. I knew the M5 would be coming hard and fast once I hit D-H so I wanted to take that last corner a fast as possible. OOPS!! I dropped a tire off into the grass on the outside and spun…ending up in the middle of the track. The M5 and both of the M3’s each slammed into me in succession, punting me farther and farther down the track until I finally got straightened out and going again. It was a lost cause. It was even too late for the guided missile attack. I finished in 4th.
Possible points: 141 Points won: 0
Europe Classic Car League
Ginetta G4 against three Alfa’s, a Karmann Ghia and another G4. Easy lineup. Easy win. Too easy. Only 8 points.
Points: 8
Pan Euro Championship
BMW M3 GTR against (in the order of their finish) Jaguar XJ220, Pagani Zonda C12, Audi Nuvolari Quattro, RUF BTR, Merc SL 600 (R230). I gave my M3 a Stage One NA tuneup, a racing chip, S3’s, and full drivetrain upgrades. Turned out to be an easy win. Margin of victory was 24 seconds at the last split. I thought I might be overdoing it, but after averaging 3 points per race for the first three, I wanted to be sure of a win.

I have to confess that I just did this race for max points about a month ago, so I had a little bit of an unfair advantage, as least in knowing what car to use and what kind of a lineup to look for. I used the Motul Pitwork Z, modded to 721 hp on the setup screen, 711 hp on the replay screen. I went through at least 6 or 8 lineups and then hit the magical, mystical, perfect lineup! All Group “C” cars for max points, and a slow one in the front. It was the Toyota GT-One, the Playstation Pesky, Audi R8, Peugeot 905 and then the Sauber. The 905 held up the Sauber enough that I passed them both almost immediately, and started chasing down the front three which were being held up by the GT-One. By A-F the Pesky had gotten the lead, but I was already in 2nd. I passed the Pesky by getting inside of him on the “hit” of miss-hit-miss. I had a 3-second lead at the end of the first lap, but then the Pesky started reeling me in, and was right on my tail through the technical section. I think his tires started going away then, though, and I was able to slowly pull away for a 1.9 second victory!! Total time for both laps was 12’26.675.
Points: 200!!! (I had only managed 139 when I did it a month ago)

A couple of weeks later, I managed to persuade my uncle to give me another chance. Bob objected though, as he enjoyed having me work at their family business. He was the foreman and never cut me any slack.
This time, I neglected their suggestions and chose a Tommy Kaira ZZ-II for us to drive. Again, Bob wanted to go first. I was more than happy, as it is a lot easier to aim for a known time.
Bob wasn't in luck. He bounced off the armco at Flugplatz, and kissed it again later (I forget where). Still, he ended up with a 7'31.150. But the car was in a bad shape so we got it repaired and came back another day.
The ZZ-II was a lot more stable than the Zonda, and I clocked a 7'25.738 without too much difficulty. I was freed from my gas mask! I was happy, but couldn't help thinking how happy I would have been if I had chosen the ZZ-II first. I could have kept it then, instead of trading it for my freedom.
Work started to pile up and Bob was in trouble without his "expert excrement expediter" (place that quote and get a cookie!). He thought it'd be a good idea to race another round, and for once, I agreed with him. But my dear uncle didn't. He said: "Listen, guys, I do love to watch you race, but you've already totaled my Zonda, and repairing the ZZ-II wasn't free, either. So no more racing." In time, I'm hoping we can turn his head.
RR challenge: This went mostly well. I'll post the results as soon as get them written.
From: wanderingmuse22 | Posted: 11/17/2005 4:41:25 AM | Message Detail A tip on the classics races- use of the Lotus Elan increases the likelihood of seeing five tortoises. However, even on N2's it'll only get you 9 a spec points. Having said that, the Elan on N2's corners faster than a lot of cars on S2's, and it's very, very fun through the technical stuff.
Sackedagain, your challenge is awesome. I haven't finished it yet, but I've enjoyed it. Might you consider substituting the euro classic race with the Liga B race?

The Ring Race Challenge:
World Classics:
For this one I used a '63 Skyline 1500 Deluxe with NA1, racing exhaust and S3s. My mistake was that I used the stock 3-speed tranny, causing the car to top out at 140km/h (87mph) so I was at the rev limiter for most of time on straights. There was a 2CV that I passed (the autopilot did, actually) before the starting line but got owned by everybody else. I was 3rd for a while as I passed Alfa Spider 1600 Duetto and Corvette C1 around Schwalbenscwanz, but couldn't block them on the D-H so I finished 5th...dang it.
Possible points: 60 Points won: 0
Club "M":
M3 '04, bone stock, no oil change.
The GTR started from pole, followed by M Coupe, M3, M5 and CSL in that order. Hatzenbach didn't go too well though there was no major problems. I passed the CSL at Flugplatz, but the others were too tightly clustered to allow overtaking. I had to wait until A-F to pass them, but I was second after that. The GTR had pulled away from the pack by then, but I kept gaining on him until I seized the first place by braking late for Karussell. After that, everything was neat and tidy, and I won with a time of 7'58.983. That was 3.4 sec ahead of the M5 that had passed the GTR at D-H.
Points won: 131
Europe Classic Car:
Another disaster. I used a used Fiat 500L with S3s, FC gearbox, Sport clutch and flywheel, and hp boosted to 63. Though it had ok P/W ratio, the car was just too slow and I finished 3rd, 19 seconds behind the winner, an Alfa Giulia.
Possible points : 27 Points won: 0
Pan European Championship:
I had raced this for 200pts before in a stock M3 GTR, so I just sorted my garage by P/W ratio and went looking for something similar in performance. I settled for my beloved stock RGT. The third lineup I got was worth a nice 167pts so I went for it. Lineup was Tamora - XJ220 - SLR - Cizeta - M5. I passed the M5 almost immediately, right after the fast right before Hatzenbach. I tried to pass the Cizeta at Flugplatz as I was a lot faster there, but the Cizeta is a wide car and managed to cut me off. The AI doesn't seem to have a clue on how to take that particular bend, it even uses two braking points. I tried again after Schwedenkreuz as I had more momentum and there was space on the left side of the track. But the Cizeta cut me off again, hitting my front end and destabilizing my car. I tried to correct and it was about as big a success as I could hope for, given the situation. I slid to the inside, all the time braking, and my lucky drift over the grass ended in the middle of Aremburg right behind the Cizeta and with nose pointing at exactly right direction. My Cizeta problem solved itself when the bastard crashed in the left on top of the hill before A-F. I was lucky again because the Cizeta almost hit me when bouncing between the armcos. The SLR wasn't too far away, and I caught up with him at Kallenhard. We battled it out until Wehrseifen where I braked later and seized the 3rd place. After successful turn at Bergwerk, I was drafting the XJ220 and managed to pass him about halfway between Bergwerk and Mutkurve. He must have eased off the throttle or something. After Mutkurve, we were side by side with the Tamora, but I had brake early for the next fast right because I was on the outside. Instead, I passed him from the inside at Klostertal(?). After that, things were peachy. Not much to write about. Just nice racing lines, no incidents except for unintentional drifting through Bergwerk which I got under control nicely. The second lap time was 7'21.963, less than four seconds slower than my RGT record. Total time 14'58.984, 17.5 secs ahead of the XJ220.
Points won: 167 --- Currently suffering from the lack of a good sig.

The Ring Race challenge, continued:
GT All Stars:
Like Don Papa, I must admit that I knew a little something about getting high points in this one. I used another JGTC machine, the Woodone Supra, with Stage 3 turbo and on R2s. This got the car up to a garage figure of 788hp. The first(!) lineup I tried was a good one, worth 199pts. It looked like this: 787B - PS Pescarolo - Speed 8 - R89C - Vertigo. I drafted the Vertigo until overtaking him at braking for Hatzenbach. This involved a little DTM-style contact. Again, I was faster through Flugplatz, so I managed to draft and pass the R89C on the following "straight". I was overly cautious at Schwedenkreuz and the Nissan got past me again. But his luck didn't last. I got past him quickly after Aremburg and got to draft the Speed 8. It was then I noticed that I was faster on straights than the group C/LMP cars (what gives?). I battled it out with the Speed 8 through A-F, and passed him on the following straight. At Karussell I was just 3.5secs behind the leader. The 787B and the Peskie gained a little more gap through the first half of the technical section, but by the Pflanzgarten II split (T9) I was only 3.3 secs behind the 787B again. The distance between the 787B and the Peskie was perfect for drafting, so I drove in a nice slipstream all the way through D-H. at T10 I was at +3.4secs, passed the Peskie shortly after that, and the 787B just before T11 (-0.3 then). Woot! I gained almost 4 secs on D-H only! Nothing special happened before Mutkurve, I was just gaining more lead slowly but surely. At Mutkurve, I went over the curbing on the inside and got a horrible sideways exit with the right rear wheel on the grass. Still, I was 6.9secs ahead of the 787B by then and could ease off slightly. Mutkurve served as a perfect warning signal since I was very close to losing the race there. At the beginning of D-H I had a 3.7second lead, and a 5 second lead at the end of it. So I gained 1.3secs without drafting. In the end, I won by 6.1 seconds. The latter laptime was 6'10.053, and total time was 12'29.039 A very scary race, I was afraid of losing it all the time. The others finished in the same order as they started, only the R89C had had trouble somewhere and finished last.
Points won: 199!!! (I thought this wouldn't be beaten, but little did I know... Congrats on the full points, Don Papa!)

From: oldguy1957 | Posted: 11/17/2005 7:02:09 AM | Message Detail On an unrelated note, has anyone taken their stock SLR out for a run on the Ring lately? After all the Ringing I've been doing lately, I thought I'd give it a shot. On my second lap I got a low 7'04 on a less-than-perfect run, which is at least 2 seconds faster than I got before attempting M34. I think most of my practice laps, at that time, were at around 7'08. My point is, I'm once again considering trying to pass M34, this time doing everything clean and legal. I used two wall-rides and two grass-cuts to get it the first time. I'm mostly concerned with the pass at Karussell. Without the wall-ride, you'd have to pass the car before you get there, or drag-race him to the next corner. I think the "cheats" probably gain you about 4 or 5 seconds overall. So, If I can get my practice time down close to 7 flat, I think I'll give it a try. Any other takers? --- A.K.A. From: jwrebholz | Posted: 11/17/2005 5:03:58 PM | Message Detail That pretty much gave it away. Too bad, I was hoping for an F-body. I shudder, though, at taking that monstrosity back out onto the 'Ring. Gonna have to do it in Arcade mode, as my example is modded to the hilt (most of which is irreversible) and I think it's a unique prize car. (Not sure--I forgot where I got it) On a side note, I decided to take my '69 SS350 Camaro out to the 'Ring. I don't recall ever driving it there, so I thought I'd see how it handled. The results were surprising. The car had its share of understeer, but it wasn't unmanageable. Whereas the SL65 I recently drove was a pig on wheels, this was more of a quarter-horse. It's small enough to still be relatively agile. Its biggest problem is that Muncie 4-speed--it's geared for the drag strip. The car tops out under 120 MPH, which is inexcusable for a car with 300 horsepower. On the upside I can honestly say I took AngstKurve in this car with my foot to the floorboards and stuck it. I was running S2s but they're still only 7 1/2 inches wide, so there isn't much rubber. The car sticks pretty good at speed--I was able to take Bergwerk at better than 60 MPH, which is fast for me). The long straight at the end was the most painful, as I had to play a balancing act with the throttle to keep from bouncing off the rev limiter. After running a clean but slower than it should've been 8:39, I decided to do something about that trans. In went a FC 5-speed, with a 3.56 final drive and gearing set to Auto 12. Wide enough to allow a generous top speed, but short enough to give spirited acceleration. The extra speed made the car no less controllable, and much more enjoyable. I was able to hit 130+ on the section between Bergwerk and the Karussell--although I had to lift at AngstKurve this time--and I could keep it buried all through the final straight. In all, just by changing this one element I lowered my lap time by 20 seconds--to 8:19. Unsurprisingly this is almost as fast as my '00 Camaro SS--which also has a 5-speed, but more mechanical grip. (Yes, I know it's a 6-speed, but the T56 in this car has 6th as an overdrive gear. You get top speed in 5th) Top speed jumped from just under 120 MPH to just over 150 MPH--and the car was quite stable at that speed too. --- I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that you're a moron. My best complete run was +7 seconds. The four "cheats" are all on the first half of the course, so NOT using them puts you behind where you would like to be for passing purposes. You have to make up the time on the second half, which is where you're catching (and attempting to pass) the other cars. It's hard enough to keep the SLR on the track when you have the line you want. When you have to alter it to pass someone in an awkward place, it almost guarantees a crash. I'm sure it can be done (because it has been), but it will take some luck getting past the AI's successfully. --- A.K.A. All cars used were modified completely in terms of drivetrain, suspension, and brakes. No weight redux, hp mods, or tire upgrades were performed unless noted. I avoided reading people's reports so I wouldn't taint myself with information. World Classics: I went with a Corvette C1 that I had in my garage, demodified its hp, and shuffled the line up until I had a car that I thought would be competitive, the Cougar. Only 9 pts. but quite fun. I passed the Cougar, which started in 5th, while he was stuck behind a skyline. For the remainder of the race I spent my time blocking him. I was faster through the turns, he was faster on short straights and slightly curvy "straights". As I hit the DH I thought I was in for hell, but surprisingly, my top speed, which I hadn't been able to use anywhere else, was comparable to the Cougar's, and I didn't have to block him once there. I won by .864 seconds. Points won: 9 Club M Took the M Coupe, gave it an NA 2 upgrade, as well as a racing chip. I shuffled the lineup until I got the M3 and the M Coupe up front. 150 pts. The M5 started in 5th, and proved to be the top car. In the straight before Schwedenkreuz the M5 passed the CSL, and I passed the CSL shortly after. Coming out of Adenaur Forst, I was right on the M5s butt, and we simultaneously passed the GTR and M Coupe, but I was unable to make the move I needed to get around the M5. As we made our way to Bergwerk, catching up to the M3 together, I stayed right with the M5, but was unable to pass. Out of Bergwerk, he powered away from me, and dashed my hopes when he effortlessly passed the M3 before Mutkurve. I continued to make up ground on the M3, and the GTR had started to make up ground on me. At Wipperman, with the M3 fairly close in my sights (the M5 was gone at this point) I caught some grass, smashed the armco, and the GTR flew past me. I slowly made up the ground I had lost on the two of them, as the GTR got stuck behind the M3, but as we hit the DH, the GTR raced around the M3, the M3 powered ahead of me, and I watched as the CSL, a mere dot in my rear view got closer and closer. I managed to finish ahead of the CSL by a small margin, but 11.602 seconds behind the M5. Failure to pass the M5 before he got around the M Coupe was probably what cost me a chance at winning the race. Points won: 0 Europe Classic League I pulled out my Lotus Elan, never before used, and shuffled the lineup until I got rid of the 300, the Jag E-type, and the AC, all of which I knew would be too much. Unfortunately I had thought I remembered the Mini Marcos and Ginetta being comparable to the Elan's 104 HP. Obviously I was wrong, and the Fiat dragged my points down further. Even the other Elan and the Alfa 1600, which were comparable proved to be no competition. I won easily with a 25 second margin for a measly 7 points. Had I not forgotten to add in driver ballast I may have gotten another point or two out of it. Points won: 7 --- Currently working on FFX: Tidus SCC, braving the Lightning Plains. The Tuscan Speed 6 massacred the field, and I made too many mistakes to keep up with 2nd and 3rd place (a SLR McLaren and I forget what else) This left me battling for 4th with the M5 and an Aston Vantage. I battled my way past both, and built a healthy lead until the DH at which point the M5 forced his way past me after being blocked a couple times. I caught back up to and passed him before Bergwerk, and held my lead for quite some time. I might not be getting first, I thought, but at least I get to avenge my loss in Club M. Wrong! Following Pflantzgarten, I trailed a tire off into the grass, spun out, and simply didn't have enough track left to catch the M5. 5th place. Points won: 0 GT All Stars I remembered this being filled with race cars, but I mistakenly thought it was LM cars, not class C, and picked the RX-8 LM, gave it a stage 3 turbo, thinking it would be enough to get me a couple extra points. From: oldguy1957 | Posted: 11/18/2005 7:25:31 PM | Message Detail WR™ Plymouth Super Bird '70 My first reaction to this week's WR™ was, "Egads!! Not the Seattle mission nightmare, revisited!!" But after I started driving it, I realized it was such a bastard because Seattle is such a tight course...at least in the areas where it caused problems. At high speeds, sure, it pushed. But it was a very consistent and predictable push. I found it very easy to determine where it's limits are. It's so predictable that I don't find it hard to believe that my best time was exactly the same as ciscrack's at a 8'14. I think most who push it close to it's limits, without getting crazy, will be within a few seconds of that. There are a couple points where I'd like to question the accuracy of the version of the Super Bird PD gave us, though. I drove many Mopars of about that hp and year "back in the day". **Here is where you say to yourself, "Oh, god. The old guy's going to start telling stories".** Well, I can't help it. I spent half the hours of my life from my mid teens to mid twenty's laying underneath these cars, or sitting inside the engine compartment, turning wrenches and knocking the skin off my knuckles. Anyway, the handling would have been pretty realistic if they had added about two inches of slop in the steering. I'm not kidding. Driving down a straight, level road, I could turn the steering wheel back and forth at least two inches (sometimes seemed like 6) without the car reacting at all. Every Mopar of that era I ever drove was like that. You just get used to it and don't notice it anymore. But the predictable push, and a tiny bit of oversteer under full power is very realistic. I never drove a car with an actual Hemi, but I drove several (440's, 383's and 340's) that had been modified to the 425 to 475 hp range. PD lists the Super Bird at 431. I can tell you that NONE of them spun the rear tires in third gear at 80 mph. I had a friend with a 440 Charger that could smoke one tire in third gear if he tried real hard, but I'm pretty sure all Super Birds came with (what we called) posi-traction, which would make it very difficult to break the rear wheels loose even in 2nd gear unless you wind it up and drop the clutch. I question the top speed, too. I had a '68 GTX that had the 440 replaced by a 383 that I had up to 140 mph late one night (try THAT with several inches of slop in the steering!). I didn't have a tach, but I know I wasn't turning 6000 rpm's. The valves would start floating at just over 5500. Of course, the rear-end gear ratio could be different. But I always thought of Super Birds as being set up for higher speeds, as opposed to having shorter gears for drag racing. Okay. I'll stop boring you with my reminiscing. I liked the car on the Ring more than I thought I would. --- A.K.A. I won mine in some God-awful color (baby blue, maybe?), and sold it without even driving it. When I was a kid, I thought they were the coolest cars ever made. Then I developed some taste... Viper- "Oy, Oy, Oy?" "Ake, Ake, Ake!" Sorry about that. I've been spending a lot of time in the world of the Dark Tower, so that was the first thing that popped into my mind. Oldguy- Having each car have a unique steering feel is something I think PD should work on for the GT series. I think it might be cool to see an adjustable steering option, too. Pro Race Driver had one, though it was a game option, not a tuning one. Oni- I'm fairly sure I had the Force Feedback cranked, and I don't think I used any driving aids. I may have left ABS on if it was an individual option (I know I did in Forza, but the brakes are an on/off switch there). I think the real issue I had with the feel came not from the game itself but from the game's use of the DFP. Every non-GT racing game I've played has felt weak and mushy using a DF/DFP, and the play suffers for it. Using a DS2, EPR (among others) feels on par with GT, but once the DF/P comes out, they all lose something where GT gains it. The FF was so poor on WRC (the first DF-compatable game that I bought after GT3) that I actually took it back because I thought it was defective. I learned later (after I can no longer find WRC) that other racing games are like that. I debated using R2's but went with R3's hoping they would last. At first glance the grid looked pretty fierce : AMG Mercedes CLK GTR Racecar Sauber C9 Ford GT LM Spec 2 Toyota GT One Ford GT LM Racecar '02 I really like the Fairlady, it served me well early in the game after I got it ( I cannot remember where from ) winning a lot of Races. So it was like slipping into a comfy pair of old slippers. At the start passed the '02 Ford almost straight away and the other Ford and Toyota before approaching Schwedenkreuz. The Toyota tried to push me off at Aremberg but then went around the outside of me, so I was able to lean on him to stay on the track while he went into the kitty litter. Caught the CLK exiting Bergwek then settled into chasing the Sauber who was 6.5 seconds up the road. Made up some ground from Galgenkopf to the start finish line ( 201 mph top speed on straight, thats scary!) Second Lap : the Sauber seemed to be able to hold a 3 – 4 second lead so I had resigned myself to finishing second driving conservatively. Then suddenly I was right on his tail at Karussel and he was struggling. So I monstered him through the technical section and he finally cracked and lost it approaching Brunnchen(?).
