viperinthegrass Posted 8/6/2006 5:37:39 PM Welcome back Flibutz ! You have been missed. I must confess, however, that when I said Sunfire, I mean Solstice. My apologies. That doesn't take anything away from the excellent Sunfire photos, however. When you made the offer for requests, VitG, I was thinking the Solstice is a rare treat, but got the names confused. You know what else might make for good photos? '54 Corvette Convertible, driven solo (so the top is down), on N2's (whitewall tires), if the offer for requests is still open. --- For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Matthew 24:27 viperinthegrass Posted 8/6/2006 10:59:50 PM message detail Sure no problem, I will have a go over the next couple of days as I need to catch up with Photo's of the RR Motul Civic and the new RR and WR as well. It is Top Gear night here so I probably won't get a chance to do a lot of driving until Tomorrow. I think I may have a couple of Soltice shots in my Viperin album, under Prize Cars at the 'Ring. Thanks for the compliments, I aint no Mapplethorpe but I do enjoy managing the album. s35.photobucket.com/albums/d195/viperin/ --- photobucket.com/albums/c53/RingDiary/ wanderingmuse22 Posted 8/7/2006 10:34:35 AM message detail ALFA ROMEO Giulia Sprint GTA 1600 '65 I absolutely enjoyed my laps in this vintage Alpha. I'd driven it before, but not in a long, long time. I set mine up with N2's, no aids, and classical music in the background. Instantly the Alpha let me know that she liked to dance. The Giula Sprint's modest whimsy its charm: letting the back out around nearly every bend, but never harshly, and very forgiving on exits. My lap was in the 9'40's, and noone is going to accuse this little Alpha of being a fast car. However, from the simulationist perspective (with a nod to Sackedagain), it's a joy to drive. If I lived in Germany, and had the resources, the Giulia Sprint is the caliber of car I'd enjoy 'Ringing in: nimble, but not deadly; safe, but not boring (especially with real life consequences looming in the balance). You can definitely add the Giulia Sprint to the list of low powered but high enjoyment 'Ring cars such as the Ginetta G4, Lotus Elan, Toyota MR2, etc. I can see how someone seeking speed and arcade driving experiences would pass over this Alpha, but I enjoyed the pick. Peace. --- For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Matthew 24:27 viperinthegrass Posted 8/7/2006 8:51:40 PM Hey Flibutz, that video was a nice find. ( Well, if some twist of fate throws you in Finland, it's easy to come say hi! =D ) Ironically, now that I've changed my status to "speed demon" on the map, I'm probably quite rusty. I'm hoping to get a chance to try out some of the latest Riders™ during the weekend, any must-drives? I think I need to take a shot at the AMMC BR™ at least. wanderingmuse22 Posted 8/10/2006 6:24:58 AM message detail I'd say the DNX (was that what it's called?) is a must drive. The Acura prototype thingy. --- For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Matthew 24:27 Aroundthering Posted 8/10/2006 8:55:59 AM I was recomended Alfa Romeo, not sure which so I picked: Alfa Romeo GT 3.2 V 24 V '04 This car reminded me that I'm tired, because I spent half of my time spacing out listening to my brother complain about how slow it was. After a lap of warm ups that probably took 9 minutes(forgot I should write this stuff down) I cought a second wind. The second lap was highlighted by a few things. I found myself in the grass which is the usual for newer cars as well as finding myself suprised when I kicked into an unexpected 6th gear. I liked how well the car rolled throught turns with a gentle tapping of the brake. I didn't like how slow the car felt under 50 MPH, it was like CMON! But I got over that and enjoyed a nice gentle ride on the ring. Time- 8:50:336 It was sloppy. In other news I completed the S-liscence test on the ring with 18 seconds to spare today. Made sure I didn't mess up so the time was longer than my usualy run and gun times. --- The ring. No, not the movie. The track. OmicronPersei8 Posted 8/10/2006 5:00:10 PM Viper, your photos are top notch. Nice air with the Spoon, and I see you quoted my color opinions on the T350C. WR- ALFA ROMEO Giulia Sprint GTA 1600 '65 A car I despised in my early days of GT4. License test IB-15. In retrospect, my frustration has nothing to do with the car; I really don't care for Citti di Aria. IRL I'm not claustrophobic, but at that track I just choke. Consequently, I had never driven this car outside IB-15 until today. Freeing the Alfa from its polygonal prison of confined walls and jutting arches of Citti di Aria, and exposing it to the open space of the 'Ring allowed me to realize this a gorgeous car. Well proportioned with taught & athletic lines that, along with the BMW 2002, would later serve as the inspiration for the modern 'sports sedan'. Definitely an A. N2's: The mild and controllable oversteer which usually leads to trouble at Citti di Aria is a real treat at the 'Ring. While not a powerful car, it's plenty light and easily drivable. Many turns I took flat out. The feedback the suspension offers from steering inputs is closer to simulation than many of the cars in this game I've driven. When you drive this car, you actually get the feeling this is a simulator, not just another game. And thats even with a DS2- a steering wheel would further improve the experience. I ended up driving four laps, with a best time of 9:42.994. No record breaker, but a real treat. Thumbs up: Sexy Italian styling, smooth powerband, communicative chassis Thumbs down: Maybe about 40 or so hp less than perfection, but not much else to complain about. Bottom Line: Sony earned their paychecks on this one. viperinthegrass Posted 8/10/2006 5:33:06 PM Greetings All, Morning Tea time here (the Pause That Refreshes), so a good chance to catch up. Omicron - I would have to agree with you 100% about the Giulia, it really does shine at the 'Ring.Muse raved about it too and I can only agree. I had the same sort of experience with the Chevy Convertible as well, an absolute Gem.For starters you would be hard pressed to know you are on N2's so well balanced is the Car.More power (and weight) than the Alfa, but the 2 speed Tranny limits it's performance, but I did not care, it is such a pleasure to drive. As you never really go very fast the brakes are superb, so it is very easy to dial in as much or as little oversteer as you wish using just the brakes. It also looks absolutely beautiful trundling around.I gave Nigel, my B-spec driver, a lap as well and he also was very impressed. Flibutz - I had a disaster a while ago and lost my email account with all my contact details. If you have email could you send me a note so I can put you back into my address book. Thanks. --- photobucket.com/albums/c53/RingDiary/ wanderingmuse22 Posted 8/10/2006 6:34:04 PM Would it be possible to tune the Triumph Spitfire and and Alpha Romeo Giulia Sprint to equal potential (on N2's, lowest common hp possible, perhaps with clutches and trannys added) and have ourselves a race? --- For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Viperinthegrass Posted 8/12/2006 8:19:19 AM message detail Greetings all, Some interesting stuff being posted, I guess that is why this continues to be the best thread hereabouts. I will be AWOL for a couple of days, as I have a couple of projects on the go.More on those later. But for now - Pontiac GTO 5.7 Coupe '04. Yes a fine example of Australian Iron. Say What !! Yup thats right, the Pontiac was a rebadged and imported Monaro CV8 joint project( I think from about 2002 - 2004 not quite sure). However from what I believe it was not very popular and they stopped doing it.Probably because the Engine was not big enough ! I have uploaded some photo's into the Gallery so you can clearly see the similarities, except for a couple of cosmetic touches they are identical. The 5.7 Litre V8 in the holden is the same as the one they rave about in Top Gear (in the Holden Vauxhall). Anyway gotta go important work afoot ! Got your email, thanks Flibutz. More Later --- Flasawoo Posted 8/12/2006 9:04:13 AM nice pics there viper, i was wondering how the spyker drives, i have never driven it before and is it worth its price tag, just a tip, you should maybe try brightening up some of those pics --- \_\_\_ Italy!!!! I saw some show a while back about exotic, luxurious vacation spots and it looked so dead on right. There's this one hotel that has an elevator that goes down to the ocean. Nice place. Way tooo pricey for me tho. --- Flibutz Posted 8/13/2006 5:06:36 AM Flasawoo - The Spyker is an interesting drive, truly one of the most memorable WRs. It's light, powerful, stubborn and potentially very fast. It's just a damn difficult drive! There are cheaper, faster cars but I'd say the experience is worth it. I've gone back to it several times, but I still haven't quite figured out the car though I finally got the best laps down to 7'16-7'17 on S2s IIRC Mr.P. - Now that you brought it up, I fired up my AC (oil change, N2s, aids off) once again. It was as wild as ever. I got an unclean 8 flat pretty soon (killed myself at mutkurve) but going under that proved difficult. Entry to Adenaur-Forst was the worst problem area. But, after ~250km and gazillion disastrous crashes later, I got lucky and pulled off a 7'52.164. Not a very realistic approach, but I just couldn't bring myself into the "test driver" mentality... And now I still feel like I need to show the car who's who! Very happy with the laptime though. VitG - Nice info on the GTO. Thanks for sharing. Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA 1600 '65 / upgraded I enjoyed the car a lot in it's stock form, but felt (as did Omicron) that a little more power might be good. I already had a tuned GTA (ride history # >500), so I just removed some upgrades and added N2s. Mods that stayed were: N2s SR exhaust NA tune 1 Port polish Engine Balancing Weight reduction 1 (couldn't take it off) Which took the car from 121hp / 745kg to 168hp / 722kg. It's a blast to drive, and around 25 secs faster around our beloved 'Ring. Any more power and it'd start screaming for FC transmission and LSD, probably. I feel that's just the right amount of power for the car. --- Honda Dualnote '01 aka Acura DN-X Oil change, N2s, aids off. Sweeet! Possibly the most enjoyable power oversteer in the game coupled with a gentle lift oversteer make this car an amazing drive. With this beast, I think sideways is the way to go. 4WD offers great acceleration out of corners even when sliding, and the drifts are very stable and controllable. The replays would look cool if the car wasn't so hideous (which is the only downside I've discovered so far). I put close to 200km on the car today, and the laptime went down from 7'49 to 7'43.981. --- aka Flippendale Flasawoo Posted 8/13/2006 5:46:13 AM message detail wow, i have never even taken my honda dualnote for a spin, i've always seen it as a very boring, sluggish car that will turn left and right, with no real excitement, sounds like a blast to drive though, i'll have to give it a whirl. --- \_\_\_ Italy!!!! World champions 2006_/_/_/ (i will not change this sig until they win again) wanderingmuse22 Posted 8/13/2006 11:40:37 AM message detail See, the Dualnote/DNX is proof that PD simply has a personal grudge against the RUF CTR2. RanBinRai- I have saved that video you linked. Awesome find. Where are those cars in GT4? Flibutz- Your BR sounds like a great idea. *Eyes Alfa Sprint Speciale* Oh, if anyone cares- I passed DM 34 today. Only 6 official tries. I did, however, run the 4 hr race with the SLR & practiced numerous laps both in my old game and this new playthrough. Haven't taken my new Nissan for a victory lap yet... The old proverb- "Cry in the Dojo; Laugh on the Battlefield" held absolutely true for me. I practiced obsessively for it, and once I actually went to do DM34, it just didn't feel so intimidating. Did miss by .450 on my 4th try, frustrating me a little, but I nailed it two tries later. WR- Pontiac GTO '04 5.7L A car with an interesting history. Most people figure this is simply the Australian imported Monaro coupe, configured to American requirements. While this is true, its real history is far more American... Anyone remember the Cadillac Catera? Circa 1994. Advertised as "The Caddy that Zigs", with the little duck? Cadiallac, fresh off its well intentioned but colossal failure the Allante, worked to develop a RWD sports sedan/ coupe that could compete with the slew of 5 series Bimmers, E class Mercedes, and the then new Acura Legend sports sedans. GM enlisted Euro partner Vauxhall and Australian partner Holden to aid in development, but the final product was not well received in the US. GM didn't yet have a good motor for it, opting for a wheezy V6, and the initial chassis was too flimsy compared to the BMW's of the day. Rather than live, learn and develop, GM scrapped the project stateside, killing the Catera off here in the US. It was GM's Australian division Holden that worked to develop the original chassis, and had the chutzpah to shove the LS1 under the hood, thus giving birth to a true modern muscle car, truly in the spirit of John Delorean's original 1964 Tempest. So while the parts are wholly American, the modern GTO is certainly borne of Australian wherewithal. As for styling, its a bit of a bloated Cavalier in its looks to me. Not ugly, but nothing that pushes me strongly one way or another. S2's: After DM34, the car felt like a diet SLR. All the same characteristics were there, just not as extreme: powerful V8, significant mass, independent suspension, tall gearing. While easy to drive, i kept waiting for something on my drive to make me say "wow ". Alas, the moment never came. It was predictable, docile, reasonably fast, yet a little unremarkable. Only had time for one lap- 8:04.001. Thumbs up: Powerful V8, compliant suspension Thumbs down: For 350 hp, its as exciting as repairing ceiling tiles Bottom Line: Not a bad car overall; however, adrenaline junkies need not apply Flibutz Posted 8/18/2006 3:15:59 AM message detail It may take a while before I can do the BR™ myself, I still don't have power at home, and internet access is not everyday stuff either. BTW I too enjoy science fiction. i have a particular fondness for the classic sci- fi stories, notably Philip K. (can't write his last name thanks to censorship, rhymes with sick). After some thought, I have settled on the Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider as my BR choice. I had thought about the Sprint Speciale, but I didn't want to cut up a prize car. wanderingmuse22 Posted 8/26/2006 6:35:47 PM The Duetto is gorgeous. I can't speak for the performance, but it's beautiful. --- For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Matthew 24:27 viperinthegrass Posted 8/26/2006 10:33:35 PM A lot of technical issues this week so have been a bit pushed for seat time but have managed a few things – BR™ - Alpine A310 1600 VE Vs. Isuzu Bellett 1600 GT–R I tried to build these into RaceCar’s that were evenly matched and ended up getting it pretty close. I would alternate laps with each Car chasing the Ghost of the other one and as I became more confident in each Car, was able to push harder each “Race” and ended up cutting off about 13 seconds on my initial efforts. The Alpine was the harder Car to drive and adapt to, but ended up being the faster, not by much mind you. This is how I set them up (both had an oil change and rigidity refresh) – Alpine NA Stage 1 – 151 kw……..P/W = 6 . 337 Wgt. Reduction stg. 1 ( then added 75kg ballast @ -50) Weight = 977kg N3 Tyres Sport Clutch Sport Flywheel Aids off Best Lap - 9 ’ 18 . 038 T2 time - 1 ‘ 43 . 810 Bellett NA Stage 1 + Racing Exhaust – 148 kw…….P/W = 6 . 460 Wgt. Redux stg. 1, Weight = 940 kg N3 Tyres Sport Clutch Sport Flywheel Aids off Best Lap - 9 ’ 23 . 519 T2 time - 1 ‘ 44 . 347 The Bellett was easy to drive, certainly much easier than the Alpine ! The soft front end would dive dramatically under Brakes leading to a bit of understeer if you try to turn too quickly, much better to brake lightly early, then allow the weight to transfer back to the rear before steering or applying throttle. The Bellett then digs in pretty nicely with just a hint of mild oversteer. The N3’s did produce a lot of wheelspin and on reflection the stock Tranny was the main difference between the two, running out of puff earlier and not as crisp as the Alpine stock setup. It took a while to adapt to the Alpine and I had to fiddle with the ballast to enable me to have half a chance to keep it on the track, talk about terminal yawing oversteer !! With the weight shifted though it is an awesome Car to punt quickly, much more intense than the Bellett but very satisfying. Interestingly not as much wheelspin with N3’s. In summary I think they are pretty evenly matched with the setups I settled on, probably could have been even closer if the Bellett had an extra Gear. Should make an interesting Video. Speaking of Video’s I am very annoyed at the moment as there is a problem with the site that host’s my high resolution Vid’s. Streamload were merging with Mediamax and upgrading everyone’s accounts which tok longer than they thought which is fair enough BUT during the upgrade my account has been lost ( temporarily I hope) so I cannot access my account and the links to my video's are not working. This is a nuisance as I had not long finished uploading some new vid’s including one’s I had made for Ciscrack and Flasawoo as well as the world Premiere of a “Big Production” number I had slaved over. Hopefully things will be put right soon. Will keep you posted. I am aware the IROC wheels are not exactly period correct for a historic racer, but they sure looked cool - Oh, some interesting news- I received a DVD the other day from Lotus. Its a promotional sales disc for their 2007 lineup, full of propaganda enticing me to buy a Lotus (as if I needed any motivation). It includes some cool historic F1 footage as well. Very cool. My interest is peaked, so I called and I'm going to pay a visit to the 'local' Lotus dealer. In a city as big as Chicago, there is only one authorized Lotus dealer, located in the southwest suburbs. It's about a 1 1/2 hr drive for me. Anyways, I'm looking forward to checking out an Elise. RanBinRai Posted 8/30/2006 9:08:02 PM Aah, what a coincidence. I just saw an Elise yesterday speeding down the thru-way(sp?). It was a plain red color, black rims and all. It looked like a Motorsport Elise in the game, except without the wing in the back. It was the first one I saw in reality, ever. In fact, the same day, I saw a '99 Dodge Viper GTS parked in front of some building that I didn't care to look at, for obvious reasons. It too, was red, with the white (or is it silver?) stripes down the middle. The 2nd one I've seen. Unfortunately, my other encounter with one of these babies wasn't a close one. Although the first one I saw was in motion, it was going the opposite direction on the highway I was on, in the farthest lane too. I'd love to just be riding along, and have one ride by next to me. That'd be great. One more, just thought of it. On my way home from church a few weeks ago, we came to a stoplight at an intersection. I saw a Ford Model T on the through road. It had just stopped, waiting to find the opportunity to make a right. We continued on, and it soon was behind us. Amazingly, it sounded just as it does in GT4. I saw a Studebaker on the same street too, though it's not as significant. Just thought I'd share that with you all. ciscrack Posted 9/2/2006 1:14:38 PM message detail Viper- Saw the vid, not too bad, but when I do it, I park all the way at the bottom of that hill to get max speed and flight out of the run. Soul- Small world, I guess that means you've seen the Mt. before? It's an incredible trail to experience if you do decide to visit it someday. You do need to get permits to go on the trail and they are extremely limited. If you do attempt it,you'd better be ready for spending 14+ hours on the trail covering 22 miles, and hope that you don't experience altitude sickness. Spending a few days camping at high altitude will help lessen that risk. I've witnessed the result and it is not a pretty sight. I barely felt the altitude at all after spending time in Yosemite at around 8,000ft., but the woman with me didn't fare too well and caused our hike to end up taking 19 1/2 hrs. 3:35am-11:00pm. She realized she isn't a mountain climber and never wants to see the Mt. again.I probably could've cut 3-4 hrs. off that time if I was by myself, or with someone at the same fitness level as myself. I already want to try it again next year, hopefully in much less time. Now for your eyes to feast- This first set is from the Clouds Rest(9,926ft.) trail in Yosemite. Yosemite Valley is at a little over 4,000ft. s13.photobucket.com/albums/a282/ciscrack/Clouds%20Rest/ And from the highest point in America(excluding Alaska) Mt. Whitney(14,497ft.) s13.photobucket.com/albums/a282/ciscrack/Mt%20Whitney/?sc=4 --- I wanna sleep in hotels that smell like the pheromones of 16 yr. old girls. photobucket.com/albums/a282/ciscrack/?sc=1 Soulidarity Posted 9/2/2006 2:10:15 PM ya, I've seen the mountain. I'm pretty sure I don't have any real problems with altitude sickness. I just spent part of last weekend hiking around on Mt. Charleston (outside of Vegas). I was above the 9000 foot mark at the highest points. I adjusted to the thinner air within about an hour. There's a trail that goes up to the peak of Mt. Charleston (about 12,000 feet). I plan to try to make time to hike at least part of it before I move out of Vegas in about 3 weeks. --- I'm kind of a big deal. People know me ~ Ron Burgundy Soulidarity Posted 9/2/2006 2:11:02 PM and speaking of Alaska, have you ever been to McKinley or do you have any plans to at any point? --- I'm kind of a big deal. People know me ~ Ron Burgundy ciscrack Posted 9/2/2006 2:49:08 PM I'm not big into snow, so no, I don't really have any desire to do McKinley. I would like to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro someday tho, and it would be interesting to make the hike to Everest base camp, but I really don't want to summit that monster. As for the altitude sickness, below 12,000ft., you might start feeling a little light headed and breathing is a little harder, but above 12,000ft. is where it really starts to kick in. Most people who try and fail on Whitney will easily make it to Trail Camp @ 12,000, but after climbing the infamous "97 switchbacks" to Trail Crest at 13,600ft. they call it quits and head back down. You'll start to get a pounding headache, nausea kicks in, dizzyness, blurry vision, etc. Trail Crest is a good place to stop in that case as that's the first time you get to see into the backcountry and the rest of the trail to the top is a pretty steep drop 2,000+ ft. down and the 5 "windows" you pass thru are pretty narrow sections of trail with huge drops on both sides. --- ciscrack Posted 9/2/2006 2:50:14 PM BTW- Where are you moving to? --- I wanna sleep in hotels that smell like the pheromones of 16 yr. old girls. photobucket.com/albums/a282/ciscrack/?sc=1 Soulidarity Posted 9/2/2006 3:30:56 PM Riverside County in Southern Cal. It must be really nice to find a place like that to truly "get away" for a time. I'm am jealous. Oh, I had my Lotus test drive today. The dealership is like an autoshow unto itself, as they are also a big Lamborghini dealer as well. Plenty of eye candy... The Lotus I drove was a 2006 model- Titanium with a beige leather interior (kinda odd, IMO). It had the Touring package, so leather and the "softer" suspension were equipped. Standard tires are radical Yokohama Advan's, the real life equivalent of GT4's S3 tires. They are practically race slicks. Anyway, the car was ridiculously quicker and more nimble than I expected. I had driven a S2000 recently; while it was pretty sharp, it would have been no match for the Elise in any capacity, I'm sure. The one I drove had 500 miles on the odo, and the asking price was $42,000. They actually had 4 others, including a starlight black one for $50,500, beyond my budget for sure. No blue ones, as that is the color I prefer; didn't order one yet, as Mrs Omicron is still a little unconvinced. I'll keep fighting, though... Oh- there were in fact 3 Exiges there, in stock. two red ones and a black one. They are pretty cool looking, but at $57K, we're talking Boxsters and used Vipers. ciscrack Posted 9/2/2006 7:26:17 PM Thanks Omicron! I like how first, I find out one guy reposted my flying car trick on another site and now you go and have one of my pics on your 'puter. Which one(s) did you pick? One of my fave's is "reflection" with the sun just out of view, giving it a heavenly, surreal effect. Right after I took those three pics, some other hikers came and started filtering water out of that lake and made a bunch of ripples so I was glad I saw those opportunities when I did. I can't stop marveling at how incredible my photos turned out. I was using my moms new digital camera which is far superior to mine, and the only pics I have from my previous visits are on film and aren't nearly as impressive. There were a lot more clouds on my first trip there that were just barely hanging above our heads. I truly did have my head in the clouds that day. --- OmicronPersei8 Posted 9/2/2006 7:44:02 PM I snagged a couple, including the reflections one, but I chose the sunriseongranite pic. Flibutz Posted 9/15/2006 12:59:18 AM Still alive, I see. I've been working my ass off lately, which is a good thing given my everlasting money troubles, but GT time has been very limited. I ran the first lap with my Galant GTO '70 for the BR™, clocking a 8'37 and noticing that the Galant is a little harder to drive than I thought. I'll be comparing it to the Isuzu 117, which I drove earlier for around the same laptime IIRC. Anyway, work beckons, I'll catch you later. --- viperinthegrass Posted 9/15/2006 7:29:35 AM Greetings from Oz, It is late here and must be nearly Friday in Gamefaqs land so I thought I better announce the WR™. The choice in music was very fitting too. --- I'm kind of a big deal. People know me ~ Ron Burgundy viperinthegrass Posted 9/17/2006 5:38:45 PM Hello everyone, how goes it ? I hope everyone is enjoying the Lotus Elan, what a sweet Car. I have over committed myself lately with projects but I did make time to drive my Anniversary WR™ pick. What a beauty I thought as the Lotus gleefully attacked corners with what can only be described as Elan. The speeds it was able to carry through corners was very impressive and would put a lot of bigger Cars to shame. It is just the bits between corners which hurt it, mainly due to needing one more gear in the box. Perfect balance, British Bulldog grip and an almost uncanny ability to find the apex for each corner itself, I felt most of the time as if the Car was driving itself and I was just observing Nigel(B-spec) Bobs. It also sounds glorious. So in summary I would have to say the Lotus Elan looks, drives and sounds like a Sports Car should. My new favorite Car. As it happened my best time was on my first lap, 8' 38 . 325 and I have yet to try it on N2's but I have no doubt it will still fly. I left my notes on the hints at home so I will have to post them later today. I have also completed part 1 of the AMMC tiebreaker Lucky so I will post my times later as well. More Later.

wanderingmuse22 Posted 9/17/2006 6:21:09 PM VitG, I highly recommend it with an FC transmission (set to 6, maybe?) and N2's. The Elan, on N2's, STILL has apex speeds that put other cars to shame.
--- For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Matthew 24:27
Chicobo329 Posted 9/17/2006 7:43:32 PM Looks like I'll have to change into a Wednesday Rider for me, I got swamped with homework this weekend but I don't want to pass up this Elan so I'll delay my report for later around that day or so.
viperinthegrass Posted 9/17/2006 10:43:31 PM message detail Thanks for the tip Muse I will most certainly try it out as you suggested.
Here are the Hints for the Elan –
"Surprisingly not picked before, although it gets Good Press"–
Everybody writes such nice things about it.
"Eat These and You Will Feel Very Languid"– Lotus Eaters
In Greek mythology, the Lotophagi ("lotus-eaters"; Greek Lôtophagoi) were a race of people from an island near Northern Africa dominated by "lotus" plants. The lotus fruits and flowers were the primary foodstuff of the island and were narcotic, causing the people to sleep in peaceful apathy. The relevant part from the Odyssey (Book IX, translated by Samuel Butler): "I was driven thence by foul winds for a space of nine days upon the sea, but on the tenth day we reached the land of the Lotus-eaters, who live on a food that comes from a kind of flower. Here we landed to take in fresh water, and our crews got their mid-day meal on the shore near the ships. When they had eaten and drunk I sent two of my company to see what manner of men the people of the place might be, and they had a third man under them. They started at once, and went about among the Lotus-eaters, who did them no hurt, but gave them to eat of the lotus, which was so delicious that those who ate of it left off caring about home, and did not even want to go back and say what had happened to them, but were for staying and munching lotus with the Lotus-eaters without thinking further of their return
"This Car Has A Lot Of Dash"– Dash = Elan Etymology: French, from Middle French eslan rush, from (s')eslancer to rush, from ex- + lancer to hurl -- : vigorous spirit or enthusiasm
So there you have it.

ciscrack Posted 9/18/2006 5:43:52 PM Haven't tried the Elan yet, but I got a ? for the leaders of this topic. Who here has tried to pass DM34 just for fun(hahaahaahaaaa, fun he says) after completing it the first time? I'm guessing vitg has, but it seems like most of us just don't want to bother with it again. I tried it 3 times last night. My second run was the best but I didn't get past 4th place and woulda finished <5secs. behind had I not crashed into the wall on those last turns. It took me weeks to get that far thru the mission before I learned the track. I just wanna complete it again so I can save a replay of a clean, non-cheating run. --- Can't Do It In Real Life? oldguy1957 Posted 9/19/2006 12:11:14 PM message detail ciscrack--I give it a shot every once in a while, but have never come within 5 seconds off passing since beating it (which originally took me almost 3 weeks). The clean runs I've tried are closer to 10 seconds off. So, if you manage to get a video of a clean, passing run, I would most definitely be interested in seeing it. I know it's been done, but as far as I know, not by anyone on this board (except by the PAL guys). --- A.K.A. Don Papa
Flasawoo Posted 9/19/2006 12:14:38 PM i've been experimenting with my PAL version, i can pass most times now by 3+ seconds so what i have been trying to do is reverse my way through the last corner and across the finish line, i haven't been able to do it yet as it's really hard pulling the 180 in such a confined space, if i do it i will post pics of the car reversing through the last corner and across the line (i don't have the right stuff to record the videos) --- \_\_\_ Italy!!!! fphjr01 Posted 9/21/2006 9:09:12 AM Just to add to the passing M34 comment, I have beaten it 3 times at least, since I've started the game that many times. Those runs include the grasscut before T3 though, which saves you almost 2 secs. I tried earlier this summer to get a clean run complete. In practice I got down to 7'00-ish, which should be good enough, but I never put it all together for a complete run. Unfortunately I'm trying to finish my dissertation now, so I haven't played a video game in months. But I would say that a clean, NTSC, M34 run is quite possible, b/c there are far better drivers than I, and I've been 3-4s off. Flasawoo Posted 9/22/2006 9:11:04 AM erm, VitG, that e-mail you sent me would be cool, however there is a problem the price of the postage will be crazy if you could tell me what you need to upload the videos, then i might just invest in it and create them myself --- \_\_\_ Italy!!!! World champions 2006_/_/_/ (i will not change this sig until they win again) oldguy1957 Posted 9/22/2006 4:54:30 PM Here's a serious question for all you Ringers: My son-in-law, who owns the company I work for, is trying to decide whether to buy a 5-year-old Porche Cerrera Twin-turbo (about 450hp) with only 13,000 miles on it, or a brand new M5. Both are about the same price (within $10,000). The car will be used 99% for business purposes (enhancing his image to our clients), and occasionally for all-out fun. He has never done any high-performance driving, but either I will teach him, or he will find a driving school. Also, it should be noted that he already has two family-type cars that he will keep, so seat-count isn't important. Only Image and Fun. Do It On Ciscrack. photobucket.com/albums/a282/ciscrack/?sc=1 wanderingmuse22 Posted 9/22/2006 6:05:35 PM I would take the 911, but I don't think it's the best choice. If the purpose wasn't tied to business impressions, then the Porsche would be fine. However, there's a connotation of intelligence, stability and strength associated with the BMW. The Porsche, on the other hand, is exotic; which could be seen as wild and irresponsible. --- For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Matthew 24:27 viperinthegrass Posted 9/22/2006 9:44:51 PM Greetings everyone. Oldguy - I agree with both Ciscrack and Wanderingmuse! Tough choice though, I wish I was in that position. The M5 would certainly project an image of maturity, stability and conservatism, but in a good way. On the other hand if the potential clients are of a younger and more adventurous mindset, that also might be advantageous if rocking up in a Porsche. If I had the chance I would buy the Porsche, as it seems like a really good buy, and lease an M5 as a Tax deduction and then switch Car's depending on the target audience. Hmmm, sitting on the fence again, bugger ! Get the M5. Flasawoo - Postage from Oz for a memory card is $5, I would be happy to pay return postage too. If not, you will need, at minimum, a capture card, maybe some video editing software as well, although most cards should come with that. My card cost me AUS$60 bucks. --- I Liked The Viperinthegrass So Much, I Bought The Company! oldguy1957 Posted 9/23/2006 7:01:15 AM Thanks for the input. I agree with everything that was said. However, it seems to me that EVERY successful business man drives a BMW or a Merc. Perhaps the Porsche would set him apart from "the crowd"...would give the appearance of being different and innovative, which is a theme we like to present for our company. The largest focus of our company is now in commercial property finance (apartment buildings, strip malls, office condos, etc). Perhaps the "risk-taker" image isn't so bad in that light, as there's always a degree of risk...or at least risk-management in commercial property purchases. We also considered an SLR, which would fall somewhere between the two choices (conservative vs. racy). But that could be seen as compromise. I think one extreme or the other is better. It's just a matter of which way to go. There's also the existence of Porsche CLUBS to consider. It would be a great way to rub elbows (network) with potential customers. Perhaps I'll recommend the Porsche, simply because he'd let me drive it occasionally, and because we would take it to Brainard International Speedway to give it work-out now and then! I'll let you know how it turns out. --- A.K.A. Don Papa wanderingmuse22 Posted 9/23/2006 6:59:41 PM In that light, the Porsche makes much better sense, and it's absolutely the one I'd rather drive.
