Loading 8G (thought it was supposed to be 10G) of extra files now.
I was surprised to be the first of a few people that may or may not have been there for GT5 right when my GS opened at 10am. Luckily the cashier girl knew what I was there for. (The Mustang I parked right outside the front door and my Laguna Seca T-shirt were probably pretty good clues)

Heh.
Well, nothing at all went wrong. Just some opening day buggies with sticking load screens and a mysterious "couldn't connect" thing popping up here and there. They seem related.
Loving all my bonus cars though!
And I bought my first car, a used Mazda Miata, of course!

I think they haven't set up the GT5 servers yet or something I dunno
Started with teh Civic Taype ARR, making the first number of races a walkthrough, will probably find something more fitting once I actually race against something with power (like a go-Kart)

Got my copy today. I have all golds in the first license (Prize car is a Tommy Kaira ZZ-S) and I beat the first Top Gear challenge because I wanted to drive the test track. My first car is one of the premium Miatas, it just seemed appropriate.
So what's in that initial patch? My PS3 doesn't currently have network or I'd go get it.
I did the install thing, but it says I only have 6.5 GB of stuff installed. Weird.

I cannot stomach gold licenes right now. I also cannot stomach trying them. I get silvers, usually well closer to a gold than a silver, and then move on.
currently level 19.5, with a Scuderia F430, an ACR viper, a C6.R (z06 vette RM), an RM 70 R/t Challenger (OMFG if you have surround sound, GET THIS. car sounds monstrous!) an Audi 5.2 R8, an SRT8 Challenger, the Go-Kart, an NSX type R (because I sure as shit wasn't buying a GTR) and the go Kart.
Photomode beckons me, but I want some mroe vehicles.
Oh, and the Ring in the wet? FUCKING AMAZING! whole new track. graham must spend time here. lots. Haven't tried the ring at night yet. it's on my to do list.
Also must find event to grind for money, as the B-Day glitch doesn't really do it for me.
will post photomode pics of new damage when I hit level 20. I expect some good things.

What exactly is the b-day glitch? I haven't been to any of the other forums since before GT5 dropped.

Nightmare: the B-day glitch was found by Glitchwerks and another user on gamefaqs to be an efficient way to get money without grinding. When the birthday of your current user rolls around (we'll say november 28th) and you play GT5, you are given a car based on your birthyear. IE: i was born in 92, so i'd be given something like a ferrari F40.
you can then gift that car to a friend, should you wish. the B day glitch works by making an alt account, with a birthday of the day you're playing on, logging on to GT5, and getting your free car. then gifting it to your alt account. sounds harmless until you realize that you can get and gift the 20 million dollar ford mark IV, Ferrari P330, or the 15 million dollar muira.
this normally takes a TON of work, and there is a limit to how many users can be registered and associated with your PS3. however, a user on gamefaqs has posted that if you deleted the savegame file of your alt account, then created a new save game, the game would give you your Bday car again.
in this manner, I could set my alt account to have a birthday of today, born in the same year as the Ferrari P330. I could get my car, gift it to my main, delete the GT5 save file from my alt, re-create the save file, and get another P330.
you can see that this can create a TON of money in a very short time frame. the 20 million dollar race cars should sell for roughly 1/4 of that figure, which'd be 5 million.
do this glitch for an hour, and you could have tens, if not hundreds of millions of in game credits. no more grinding, for the win.
Now, the game won't always give you the same B-day car. but if you want something specific, just keep re-trying it, right? the worst part for PD (and bets for us) is that they really can't do much about it. they could limit the amount of cars a user can gift, but that'd break the trading system. they could get rid of it altogether, but that'd get rid of the trading system entirely. the only legitimate way to get rid of this is to get rid of the birthday cars, so before they do that, if you want cash, ya'd better get glitching.

Are there any B-day cars that can't be obtained anywhere else?

I don't know.
However, you CANNOT sell he 20 million dollar race cars. I B-day'd the XJ13 yesterday, and it's a no go. However, you can sell the Shelby cobra you can get form that same year, for 126 grand. However, I think the best year would be 91. as far as I know, you can sell the 787B, and it's also one of th erequired cars for an event. plus, it's premium, and therefore awesome. Also the only 5 million dollar race car you can B-day, as the others are all from such recent years that a PSN account is a bitch to set up.
and to confirm: you can delete the save file and re-make it to get a new gift rather than making another PSn account. another theory is that setting a date and time of 1 year later or beforehand should make the game gift you another car. will try that out as well. if you can constantly shift form one year to the next, the alt account would be done away with
my main is a 92 birthyear, so an R92CP or a ferrari F40 would be nice. no doubt.

confirmed: resetting date on time of PS3 to your B-day doesn't work. it would seem that GT5 keeps track of the date as well. meaning the game knows it's nov 28, not march 9, like I wanted it to believe.

Interesting... Probably worth doing at some point in the future when I inevitably become strapped for cash. This is especially tempting because apparently you can't re-win prize cars.
I'm finding more things annoying about GT5 as I play it... It appears that you can't save and quit in the middle of a championship anymore. WTF is that? Some of those championships are @%$#ing LONG. You also can't restart a race within a championship, which is a decision that I get, but I'm sure I will find it frustrating when I put my protoype in a sand trap on the last lap of a 20 lap race.
I also hate that you can only get standard cars from the used car lot. If you're looking for a specific car, you have to wait for it to pop up in what appears to be a random and arbitrary assortment of cars.
A couple things about the level system bother me as well. I think it's an interesting and at times good idea to restrict what races you can participate in or what cars you can drive based on your experience. The level system itself isn't a problem for me. But I hate a couple of decisions they made with regards to it. For one, you can't buy a car that's over your level. This wouldn't be a problem if you're only buying premium cars, but if something cool pops up in the used lot and you're under-leveled, that's tough cookies. I wanted to buy a Caterham today, but my level prevented me from doing so and I have no idea when I should expect to see it in the lot again. I don't care that I wouldn't have been able to drive it.
The other level-related thing that's bothering me is that you can't view any of the upper level races. I'd like to be able to browse the higher level races and see what the entry restrictions are so that I can more efficiently buy cars. Hell, I'm just curious about what the other races are. I don't see why you shouldn't be able to peruse the entry restrictions even if you can't actually enter the race.
Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed the time I've spent on GT5 so far, but there are a few little issues that are just bothering me, issues that aren't technical at all, but design decisions, where someone thought that the best way to do things was this way.
I'm really finding that the game drives and plays great so far, I'm just starting to drive a few more cars that handle wildly different to anything in GT4... in a good way. I'm really starting to feel like I'm going to need a wheel to play this game much further, but that won't come until Christmas break, not like I'm going to have much time to play until then anyway.

even if I'm slow with one, a wheel is awesome with this game. G series is required. ya can't beat heel toe downshifting an RM zo6. even though the rm zo6 uses a sequential gearbox, heh.
as for the driver level, it is SEVERELY pissing me off. if i was a noob to the series, I'd be fucked. it's a good thing that i know some of the events beforehand, so i can plan out my purchases a LITTLE better.
also: it would appear that the LMP cars can't be sold at all. the event "lik the wind" (available at level 21 IIRC) gives the Minolta 88CV race car. I figure "hey, I'll sell this!" incorrect.
you can't sell that either. and i wouldn't be the least bit surprised if you couldn't sell the mazda 787B either.
it would appear that the game's trading function will become a MUCH more important feature than we thought. also, it appears that there isn't a level restriction on driving a car, only on buying it. IE: the XJ13 race car can only be bought when you are level 20. but I drove it at 19 after I B-day glitched it. I'm sure that i wasn't level 20 yet when i first took it out for a spin are La Sarthe.
for cost efficiency: Get a zo6 Corvette. win some races in it. get 264,000 dollars. Racing modify it. proceed to PWN 90% of the races unlocked until you hit the extreme hall. if the RM vette can enter, it'll probably win.
for the GT all stars event, you're gonna need an LMP. any old LMP. so, dump about 150 grand into the vette, getting at LEAST 750 BHP, and racing soft tires. (don't worry, they'll last the 5 laps you need em to)
set the top speed of the car to around 380kmh, and PWN the LMP cars around daytona's road course and Indy's oval. boom, Minolta 88CV.
from there you can enter the GT all stars event without hassle. I am gonan try my luck with the RM zo6 in that series though. we'll see how she does.
IN short: an RM zo6 can make quick work of MANY races. it's worth every penny man.
and i am easily available to lend out cars (or straight out trade should anyone have something I need). let me know what you require, I'll see what i can do. my selection isn't great, but it's gotten me to level 21 and 2 million+ smackers.
PSN, as always, is Slim-Whitey
like I said, the trading system is gonna be very important I believe. Divide and conquer may be the best way. 3 friends, everyone takes a certain event to win or car to acquire. once that car has seen it's use, they trade it to someoen for a car they need. both people win. less grinding. this is the beauty of the trading system if we exploit it correctly. perfect example of this is the trading topic at Gamefaqs. I have a minolta. it would seem that not many people do. I want a 787B, or a Peugeot 908. someone is eventually gonna trade me for it. probably for the 787B, as it's an easily acquired B-day car.
I have a feeling, with cars this expensive, that the enduro events, which are undoubtedtly hiding SOMEWHERE, are gonna pay big money.
