you know you read that in the Professors voice. hehe.
anyway, GOOD NEWS EVERYONE!
it looks as though the latest patch is simply amazing. XP is reputedly up, transmission gears are individually tuneable, ballast is available, engine power scaling is available (from 100% to 50% for good close racing!) the Performance Point system has been re-implemented, your entire garage is now useable online (for those of us with mroe than 100 cars we wanna take online. . .) controller sensitivity is now tuneable before race (should come in VERY handy for the X2010 challenge!) Load times have apparently been cut by some degree, the course creator now has a "corner bank angle" setting (should be sweet) museum cards have returned, and load VERY quickly compared to before. (this would also indicate a fix for the game killer bug).
apparently, car value on re-sale has increased, and menus are less prudent. when you buy a car, blasting X a few times skips all the menus, so i read. also, the pre-game menu which forced you to hit X is gone. just boots straight to the main menu.
you can now borrow a friends car for online. you can't keep it (once you switch cars it obviously goes back to them) but this could be handy at times. a shame you can't do it for a spec. would be VERY handy.
that's what i've read so far.
VitG, get your PS3 to a freaking internet hookup and download this patch. it seems frickin ballin.

double post, but it's worth the note: XP is hugely increased.
Indy500 went from about 250grand in Xp, to a whopping 750 grand in XP. leveling shouldn't be too much of an issue now. even in the mid 30's, that's a fair chunk of XP. although this still begs the question: when are steps going to be taken to permanently increase the length of the single player? this is the next logical step PD. theoretically, you've reduced the emphasis on the leveling issue, and the grinding issue therein.
however, people are now gonna be tearing through the game. IMHO, a "one make" hall of races is still needed. or some such thing. that said, a new batch of seasonals is up. 5 new races, worth more than th elast set, but not worth the 1.5 million of the first few sets.

Thanks for the heads up.
My Brother in Law has recently moved house and had a broadband connection fitted. I will see about hooking up to that and see what happens.

It's actually more than five seasonals, they added two more events to each of last week's categories. And the online used car dealership now has twice the cars, which is a nice welcome change. I also like that there's now a checkmark next to cars that you already own in the dealership. That's a nice touch.
The changes here look a lot like things that were in GT4 but inexplicably weren't in GT5. Ballast, gears, etc.
The performance point system doesn't take tires into account as far as I can tell, which is a mistake, IMO. I haven't looked real closely, but it doesn't look like it considers downforce either. Don't quote me on that, I might be wrong. It also has a couple of funky ratings, like the kart being rated at 517 PP (roughly the same as a stock '07 GTR).
It's absolutely asinine that they don't allow you to download patches from a web browser, put them on a flash drive, and update the game that way. Not everyone has internet access on their PS3.
With all that nay-saying out of the way, the patch is a step in the right direction. Again. But not a huge one. We still aren't at GT4 levels of content. I still think the game is a maximum 8.5/10. But it's getting better.

i would imagine that the PP system is based largely on a power to weight ratio. hence the kart being wonky.
tires not being taken in account can be justified, or shot down. i'd like to see it included. my PS3 is currently running a movie (the watchmen, for the zillionth time) so no GT5 right now for me. will be sure to check ou the patch for myself when i can.
that being said, no reason that DF shouldn't be in the PP system. that is simply stupid. I would imagine they don't want patches downloadable to a USB drive for reverse engineering purposes. but that's a random guess from a mostly tech-illiterate guy.

Turns out I was wrong about downforce and PP. Downforce is factored in, but it doesn't seem like a really big factor.
With the X Challenge times loosened, I now own an X2010. The times are loose enough that bronze is now pretty easy with the DS3, especially with the higher sensitivity being available (which that car was SORELY in need of). The biggest problem I had with all three of the tracks was just putting together two consecutive laps without going off. I was actually about 5 seconds faster than bronze on Nurburgring and 4-ish at Suzuka (which, oddly, I found to be an easier drive than Nurburgring). It really is remarkable driving that car, it's just absolutely bonkers.

the nurburgring GP strecke is idiotic. we've discussed this. i like the concept of the x1, but not the car itself. it's not grounded in reality at all to me. if it'd be what it was meant to be, and that is a 6g closed cockpit racing car, I'd like it.

I know the GP course is bollocks, it's just that I'd heard that Suzuka was far and away harder than the other two tracks and was surprised to find that it wasn't for me.
I'd like to see what the car would look like if they actually had to build it. While I'm fairly certain it wouldn't be as fast as it is in the game, I think it would be close. I don't know how feasible a 1500 HP forced induction V6 is or exactly how much downforce the fan adds, but I don't think the game is far off on either aspect. The problem would be in finding someone crazy enough to test the thing.

the car is currently capable of 8+gs, bordering on 9. no tire compound will take that. no human would takeat undulation along a track like suzuka. it wouldn't work.
remove the fans, and you have a feasible car. without the fans, it'll apparently pull one more G than an F1 car (roughly 6). I think that could be possible.
a life sized model has been made, and it's not the shape nor aesthetic design. it's the damned G forces the thing is capable of in GT5 which will stop it ever being feasible. a 1500hp V6 is possible, but probably not very reliable. now, a 1,000hp is very possible, and might actually make it through a race.
