The Nurburgring from GT4 and the Nurburgring Diary represent the most fun for the greatest stretch of time I've ever had in my entire history of playing video games. If only the PS2 and GT4 had the online multiplayer capacities of modern generation games. Driving games are still my favorite but no game I've played since has matched the joy of GT4's ring peril (I don't have a PS3).
I recently married and the role of playing video games has by and large transferred to my stepsons. Every now and again when the wife's at work and they're at school I get to pick up a remote and play. Much to my surprise and joy the 'Ring on Need for Speed shift has much of liveliness and spirited driving I'd missed and games like PGR3 and Forza 2 didn't provide. The car selection doesn't compare (and much like in GT4 driving aids must be turned off and cars left unmodified) but the addictive but unnerving thrill of pulling off a clean and well driven lap in a tricky to keep on the road car is there, and I highly recommend it.

I hope to someday, but a PS3 won't be in the budget for a while. Is there an online mode where 'Ring enthusiasts can lap together and chat without necessarily racing?

I hope to someday, but a PS3 won't be in the budget for a while. Is there an online mode where 'Ring enthusiasts can lap together and chat without necessarily racing? Yeah there is. As far as i can tell, the online customization options are pretty extensive. You can set it to unlimited laps. If you find good people it can be a lot of fun. Overall the online experience is pretty good. Except for the assholes, but you get them everywhere on the internet. GT4 was supposed to have an online component - there was even a Japanese only online demo. However it got cut towards the end because of time constraints or something...

there was a way to play GT4 online. it was not widely used and was difficult to set up however.
GT5's online is robust but can be time consuming. if you do manage to score a PS3 (pre played systems can be had for less than 200 bucks) then let us know. always good to have another guy to shoot the shit with.

Definitely, i haven't even played online with anyone here yet. And yeah you could play online through Xlink Kai. i tried setting it up but wasn't able to do it in a reasonable way.
If you do try to find a used PS3 avoid the ones with the chromed disc slot that have 4 usb ports. The older models have trouble running the game and apparently will fail.

I never really tried the Ring in-depth in Shift because I couldn't get over some of the physics issues. From the few races I tried there, it did seem to be modeled fairly well, but I thought I recalled it being a little wider than usual. What system were you playing Shift on? I know the PC has some mods that make the handling damn good and basically fixes all the things that were broken on release.
GT5 has a number of flaws, but the handling model is great, there are a ton of cars, and the 'Ring is downright glorious. Two months of playing occasionally have me being basically done with the game save for some endurance races, but the game hasn't left my system since November because I keep finding cars to drive round the 'Ring. It's utterly satisfying, even more so than in GT4. I don't know if a PS3 and GT5 (and more importantly, the time to play) are in your future, but there are some great things waiting if they are.
