Okay , have started to set up this thread, lots of editing and sorting to do but here is the beginning !!! Enjoy. The Nürburgring Diary: Volume XVI Welcome to the Nürburgring Diary, founded by sackedagain, and home to those who simply cannot get enough of the fabled Nürburgring Nordschleife, often referred to simply as the "Ring". The Diary is a forum for sharing virtual experiences of the Ring between Virtual Ringers. Here is where those who love the Ring can get together and share their stories about this fabulous and sometimes terrifying track, site of intense Grand Prix racing from the '20s until Niki Lauda's fearful immolation in 1976. After this, Grand Prix departed the 'Ring forever. It still occupies ani mportant place in the automotive world, being a site of near-constant testing by almost all major manufacturers, and a valuable proving ground. There is even a real-life 24 hour race that takes place every year. So, come in, kick back, sit down, and share your virtual experiences of the Nürburgring Nordschleife, dubbed the "Green Hell" by the eminent Sir Jackie Stewart. Welcome, welcome! Here are a few sites which may help expand your enjoyment of this demanding track: Two good overall sites:www.nurburgring.org.ukwww.heiser.net/documents/nurburgring/Blog Sitegt4ringdiaries.blogspot.com/Maps:luuk.xs4all.nl/ring/www.bremo.nl/pdf/nordschleife.pdfwww.heiser.net/media/2002.09.nurburgring/nurburgring_map_color.jpgwww.frappr.com/ringdiaryregularsNEW !!www.bmw.com/generic/com/en/fascination/bmwm/automobiles/specials/_pdf/bmwm_nordschleife.pdfWith acknowlegement to - SporkOfProbz And some nice photographs:perso.wanadoo.fr/olivier.jacquet/Historique%20sommaire%20E.htms25.photobucket.com/albums/c53/RingDiary/Additionally, here's a direct link to a list of the bend names:www.nurburgring.org.uk/bendnames/index.htmls25.photobucket.com/albums/c53/RingDiary/Virtual%20Map/ ( to be completed) And A Live Webcam of our Favorite track -www.nuerburgring.de/fileadmin/webcam/webcam.jpg Feel free to check out the photo gallery, submit your own photos, and plot yourself on the frappr map, even if you're brand new to this thread ! There are now 3 weekly activities that we conduct here at the Diary ; the Weekend Rider™ (WR™) - Budget Rider™ (BR™) and our newest institution, the Racecar Rider™ (RR™).The Weekend Rider™ is the oldest. In this one person (generally chosen by the last to have the pick) picks a car that they think will be amusing, enlightening, joyful, aggravating, or fun for the other Diary readers. The pick is announced sometime on Friday, preferably before too late. For the rest of the weekend, we share our experiences, be they positive or negative, with our fellow 'Ringers. Lap times are not of the utmost importance, though we do share them, compare them, and try if we can to come closest to the best. It is not a competition! Though at times it may seem that way, it really isn't. What is important is how you achieve your lap times. The Weekend Rider™ is run stock, on the tyres it comes on (or worse, at the driver's option -- the N grade tyres are closer to real world spec), with an oil change permitted. It should be a street car and comply with the noise regulations of the real Nürburgring -- i.e. stock exhaust. Also, it should be buyable or, if winnable, easily winnable. (No gold license prizes, mission prizes or Endurance/Extreme Hall prizes, unless it seems agreeable by general consensus.) You may use the driving aids if you so desire, but most of us run them with all aids off. The Budget Rider™ is the middle sibling; in this, someone (basically the first person to think up an idea for the week) announces around Monday a set of rules, consisting in a budget of some form, and restrictions on permissible modifications and allowed cars. Then we all go out, blow money, and share the results. The Racecar Rider™ is the newest addition; for this someone selects one of the Race Cars available, announces it on Wednesday, and we all take it for a spin. Cars are run as-is with an oil change, and you may tweak the tunable bits if you want. As of yet we have no protocol for choosing the chooser of the RR™Ask, and ye may receive. !!! With aknowledgement to - sackedagainOur Founder AmarynceusFor Managing The Diary SoulidarityFor Keeping Things Ticking Over To All The 'Ringers Past, Present & FutureWithout Them There would Be No Club As always, have fun and keep it civil.

Hairpinned22 Posted 5/31/2007 1:53:14 PM message detail Hey,
I'm brand new to the site (for posting and stuff like that), and I'd really like to start testing cars at the 'ring. What car/s should I try out? (I've had this game since Feb. 22, 2005)
nightmare75 Posted 5/31/2007 2:40:07 PM message detail Ciscrack hit the nail on the head. My choice is the Chrysler Prowler.
Welcome to the topic, Hairpinned. Take a look at the Weekend Rider list, most of those cars are pretty fun rides on the ring. You can also test out this weeks WR and give a report on it. The last volume of this is still hanging around for a couple days so you can look in there to see how we usually do it.
Since you've had the game for over two years, I'll assume that you're familiar with this track and some of the cars as well. If you aren't, start with something low-powered (a Lotus Elan is excellent for learning). If you're experienced, there is no car in the game that you can't drive on the Ring and enjoy.

Posted 5/31/2007 3:02:54 PM message detail Since I signed in to search the Forza 2 board for any 'Ring-related info (specifically if they fixed it or not), I figured I should stop by here and say, "Hi". I've been meaning to get back into playing GT again, so I might actually participate sometime in the future. We'll see. I'm usually ghosting around, regardless (this board is still my homepage, despite my inactivity).
---
Hairpinned- Honestly, any of the old-guard regulars (including myself) will say drive any car you want; this thread is about enjoying the drive and swapping stories about our experiences, so anything that catches your fancy is fair game. If you're looking for a bit narrower field of advice, I'll put in my two cents.
If you're mostly new to the 'Ring (by which I mean you've avoided driving it unless you had to), I'd suggest taking your favorite moderately-powered production car out for a couple of laps. Maybe a BMW M3, Subaru WRX STi, or C5 Corvette; something with enough power to be interesting, but not so much that you'll have trouble learning the course.
Personally, I prefer 'true' sports cars (those emphasizing driving experience over raw lap times) and 'Mr. Toad's Wild Ride' cars (those emphasizing pants-crapping handling or otherwise scary behavior). Cars like the Lotus Elan/Europa/Elise, Alpine A110, Caterham Seven, and TVR T350c fill out the first category, while offenders such as the Ruf Yellow Bird, Ford GT, AC Cars 427 S/C and TVR Cerbera Speed 12 comprise the latter.
Mostly, just find a car you like and drive it; there are so many 'must-drives' out there, you're bound to stumble across one you feel fits the track sooner or later.

Posted 5/31/2007 3:05:44 PM message detail O.K., thanks
I know my way around the 'ring, but I don't know the corner names, so if you say, "I took ___ turn @ 100m.p.h." I'm totally clueless on where you're talking about.
Tupacrulez
Posted 5/31/2007 3:52:07 PM message detail common full tilt corners are: Schwendencreuz *sp* , Fluplatz.....and Metzgesfeld
Another thing you're going to hear about is the Karussell *the really steep bowl* and Aremburg* 1st hairpin*
T13 is the start, and "bastard bend" is the second or 1st corner
Dottinger Hohe is the LONG straight
theres a VERY basic rundown of common corners...
Others are bergwerk, and Ex muhle
In my reviews, i ALWAYS use the proper names.....so do many others....there are maps on the first page that tell the major bend names....

viperinthegrass Posted 5/31/2007 5:28:57 PM message detail Welcome Hairpinned22 ! Well it is all happening eh ? A new WR™ and Budget Rider™ . I will get to them both this weekend. Haipinned, what tupac said is right, also another thing to do to learn where you are on the 'Ring is to do a lap ( anycar will do), save replay, then watch replay and keep an eye out for large green signs with yellow writing on them near bends. Go into photo mode and zoom in on the signs. You will soon be reeling off bend names like an old pro !! Here is link to the official Ringdiary Photo Albums - photobucket.com/albums/c53/RingDiary/Tupac - speaking of photo's I have gone to your album and I am now trying to work out a way to import that sub album into the Ringdiary album. If not I will set up another sub album and transfer them one by one. Hairpinned22 Posted 5/31/2007 5:37:39 PM message detail O.K thanks. I knew the Karussell, and Aremburg, but I could use some pictures for the rest of the turns. (exclude the long straight) Anyways, I'm reporting on a run I did at The Ring. I used the black version of the Toyota GT-One for my run. Oil change, R3 Tires, Tranny Auto 17 and High gears set for top speed, low for Accel. I never drove this car before, and, after a little getting used to, posted a time of 6' 22.058". The car was a little screwy, but held the road just fine. Not licsence test clean, but acceptible. Spun a few times, but nothing serious. Then I realized that i didn't have the Ridgity Refresh (problaly why the owner sold it ), so I quickly purchased it and ran The Ring again. This time, I didn't spin and went down to a time of 6'05.721". Pretty good for my first time with the "beast of a machine" Overall, It was a great car, stuck to the track nicely, and a great buy. (now all I need is the Black Nissan R390, and I'm on day 1410 or around there) Hairpinned22 Posted 5/31/2007 5:45:41 PM message detail Thanks for the link viper. I printed the map out and I'll stick it in a safe place (maybe under my, or my dad's, 50" plasma T.V where my Ps2 is) --- "Today is the first day of the rest of your life" -Tobymac

Posted 5/31/2007 8:17:33 PM message detail Hey, MrPinstripes, did your query into Forza2's Nordschleife prove fruitful? Does that mean you have an XBox 360? I've already committed to getting the game, but haven't done so yet. I'll post a report if you don't get it yourself.
Also, if you (or any other 'Ringer) has a 360, my gamertag is DuoHazzard, if you'd be so kind as to add me. These days I'm deep into MotoGP '06, but Ring Diarists are the folk I'd most want to play with/against online in any game, racing or otherwise.

Posted 5/31/2007 8:31:21 PM message detail Interesting coincidence, as I just purchased the black GT 0ne and ran a couple laps on the ring. My time was around 5'46 or something like that. I also took out the black 787B, which was about 5'33.xxx. Then, feeling adventurous, I dug out my trusty old (not exactly old, only had 23 miles on it) FGT. Ran a few laps, best was 5'22.
Anyway, here's my (early) report on the Prowler WR. No story this time, probably cuz I'm kinda tired and my computer's running slow today.
Anyway, I've alway looked for an excuse to drive this car extensively because it's been one of my favorites since I got to ride in a real one a couple years back when I was just a wee laddie. I didn't know much about cars back then, but I remember it being faster than Mom's minivan at least. It's always bothered me how this car isn't eligible for racing, so the only place I've ever driven it is the Ring.
I really liked driving the car. The suspension was excellent. It handled bumps in the road like they weren't there and handled violent changes in direction like they were nothing. The car was well balanced overall, braking was adequate, but there were a few problems I had. First off, this thing is geared REALLY REALLY high. It doesn't hit 2nd gear until around 70 mph. In comparison, my Viper hit 2nd at about 50 and that has close to twice the horsepower. The result was that the car seemed a little sluggish on acceleration, especially low in the power band. It was closer to having adequate power in 2nd and 3rd, but was again sluggish in 4th. This car is a little strange, usually sports cars this new have at least 5 speeds. My laps were around 8'15-8'10. But then I thought, "What if this car had the power to turn those gears?"
One NA Tune-up 2 and a racing chip later, the Prowler was sporting 340+ HP and was purring like the cat it is. Now it started to feel like something designed to go fast. It took me a couple corners to adjust to the increased stopping distance, but once I did, I really enjoyed the car. Laps were now around 7'50.
This car, IMO, is excellent for cruising in style. It's agile like a cat and is fairly quick stock. Throw in a couple power mods, and this car holds it's own with the mid-range sports car segment.
Grade: A
